What Did You Miss - July 19, 2021
Chair: Craig McMullen

Blessing: Shelley

O Canada: Susan

Craig introduced the visiting Rotarians (Joost Ueffing and Roger Sevigny) and guest (Sandy Ueffing).

Craig then introduced Joe and Joost Ueffing for their presentation on Solar Panels
Joe showed images and explained about his and Susan’s Solar Garden!

There are 120 panels, the largest private array in Nova Scotia. There were extensive renovations to a 100x100m section of their property including clearing trees, levelling and adding sand. It took 1 week to put up the panels and they are optimized to get the most sunlight possible. They also needed to be protected from animals and people as they are carrying a lot of energy! It’s approximately $2.10/watt and they expect payback in approximately ten years. It’s a very impressive addition!
John asked Joe to explain about the information they can see about the panels. Susan showed the club how they can see the display on her phone with information on all of the statistics.
Rick also mentioned that he had a (smaller!) set of solar panels and it definitely made good economic sense for him!

Pierre thanks Joe and Joost for the presentation and said how interesting it was to see the build go up in stages. Also, the new focus of RI is environmental so it’s a great project for Rotarians to consider.

Happy $$:
Sue: Happy to be alive after an accident driving home from Ottawa with her family. Luckily everyone is okay and they arrived safely (though are missing the van still in New Bruswick!).
Roger: Happy for a brand-new grandchild and great grandchild both born this week!
Greg: Happy for Al and Edna Mutch for their 66 year wedding anniversary!
Katie: Happy to be back after her maternity leave, and grateful for the club’s support through her time off.

Reports

President’s Report – Bill: Great to see so many faces back in the meeting in person, including the guests!
Secretary’s Report – Rick: There’s a board meeting Tuesday on Zoom.
Committee Reports:
Centenary Committee- Ellen: Meeting next week.
Strategic Planning Committee – Bill: meeting Monday evening.
Valley Faces Committee – Phil: Still struggling to get outstanding contracts signed and Rod will send out an update on what is left outstanding.

Presented the Club (Bill) with a cheque for $20,000, the latest contribution from the Valley Faces of Business Fundraiser!
Tulip Ambassador: Phil – just two boxes left, if anyone wants them!

Craig presented on work he had done around Privacy Issues for Charitable Groups. It’s not clear how to deal with this issue as a charitable organization, as we are only sort of responsible for keeping up with privacy legislation. Craig suggested using sync.com which is the most secure file sharing application he could find. The club then had a discussion around privacy and the risk to our data.

RI Minute – Phyllis
How did the Rotary Foundation get started? It started in 1917 and it’s first donation was for a hospital for crippled children. Since its inception, there has been a total of $4.4 Billion in total contributions! Wow!

Chase the Ace:
Sandy drew from the hat for a ticket that could be worth around $975, with a $38 consolation prize. Shelley had the winning number! But oh no! She did not pick the ACE! It’s a roll over!!!!!

Craig and the club read the 4-Way Test and adjourned.
