What Did You Miss January 31, 2022
Chair: Bill Denyar

O Canada: Susan Ueffing

Happy $$:

Bill: Happy that the Canadian men’s soccer team won their game against the USA 2-0!!
Sue: Happy in general!
Elva: Happy to have not lost power during the storm.
Phil: Happy to have such a good health care system and good care in the hospital. Also, happy to see how well the hospital staff pulled together during a fire that occurred during his time there.

Induction of Trish Rafuse
Bill and Jeff introduced Trish. The club is lucky to have her as a new member as she is already hard at work chairing the International Student Exchange committee!
Trish was officially inducted (and will be celebrated more when we are back to in person meetings!) and made a few remarks. She is very excited to be joining the club!

Illness Report:
Matt- doing very well post-accident, Bill spoke to him and Phyllis and Wally visited in person.
Randy – Bill hadn’t heard back from him this week.
Fred - Greg heard that Fred was still in the hospital in Halifax but doing well.
John – Heather updated the club that after his last chemo treatment in December that John received his report that he was in full remission. Great news!

President’s Report:
Bill updated the club on a few topics from the District.
  1. There is an Integration Summit for President Elects on February 1st and 3rd. Heather Lohr (our President Elect) is registered to attend.
  2. Nominations for DG – Jillian Gibson was nominated from Halifax Harbour. Elva knows her and described her briefly.
  3. Rotary Day of Service – an environmental project, June 4/5th. Pierre is going to take the lead on the project and contacted the Town of Kentville and Ecology Action Centre for ideas.
Strategic Plan:
A draft of the plan is with the Board of Directors. Heather shared that one of the main takeaways from all of the information gathered is that all of the stakeholders want us to be more involved in the community (us, community interviews, surveys, etc.). A pdf of the information will be available on the club homepage. The plan changed to a four-year plan to include this current year. Thanks to Bill, Rick Ramsay and the committee chairs for all of their work.

Committee Reports:
Nominations for the Paul Harris awards will be coming shortly. Think about who you might want to nominate!

Do Large Grants Ever Take Place in North America?
Yes! Rotary global grants can have large projects, scholarships and vocational teams all here in the US or in Canada…or in any Rotary region.  One of the most amazing aspects of The Rotary Foundation is that there are opportunities for large projects wherever there is need. Criteria must be met, but there have been and will continue to be large-scale projects in “developed” countries. Read about how a Rotary Foundation global grant made a big difference in Detroit, Michigan during the onset of the pandemic. The international sponsor was in India. You can view the article here.
Is there a need in your community?

Bill and the club read the 4-Way Test and adjourned.
See you next week!
