Kentville Rotary: Meeting in-person at Paddy’s, via Zoom and Live on Facebook
We are back to blended meetings. We have limited in person capacity and you can join us via Zoom or watch the Facebook Live feed in our Private Group. If you missed this meeting continue reading below for highlights or checkout the Facebook live feed.
Chairperson: Bill (Business Meeting)
O Canada led by Sue
Bill welcomed everyone to the meeting including Matt Connelly (soon to be a Kentville Rotarian).
Happy $$:
Kim: Got caught in the change in border rules between NB and NS – currently isolating at home. While isolating, Ross was mowing the lawn and got stung by a bee – and had a severe allergic reaction. Tons of Benadryl, a lot of sleeping and a trip to emergency he is now on the mend. They go for their second COVID test today (Monday). Happily, the first was negative. Kim missed out an in-person grand opening of their 6th location in Amherst (attending virtually).
Sue: Happy to receive her second shot last Thursday and to be going to see the grandkids in Ontario in a week and a half!
Pierre: Happy to be part of a Zoom meeting on Saturday and meeting Charlie Duke. He was part of the Apollo missions (first behind the scenes and eventually claiming fame as the youngest to walk the moon). Duke was the voice of mission control on Apollo 11 which landed the first man on the moon. Interesting fact – the day and night on the moon is not daily … it has about 2 weeks of day followed by 2 weeks of night!
Shelley F: Happy to get second vaccine on Friday
Rick R: Happy to be back in person. Brought a photo from 1984 of he and Bill Hawkey presenting a $2000 cheque from Rotary to assist with the school playground.
Matt: Happy to have received his 2nd shot last week and to be joining the club today!
Bill: Happy to have received his 2nd vaccine. And happy to have some of the family over to enjoy his new backyard pool!

President's Report:
Bill inducted our newest member: Welcome Matt Connelly.
Matthew Connolly is an Aboriginal senior occupational health and safety instructor who served in the Canadian military, the merchant marine industry and built and sold a safety training company in Corner Brook NL. Matthew believes in speaking up to ensure fairness in business be it on land or in the marine sector.
As an Aboriginal Veteran Matthew is very pleased to see his relatives pursuing business goals outside the established reserves. Growth is essential for Aboriginal business. Matthews’ motto “It’s Time To Speak Up” has always been his helpful opening to address many issues and concerns for small business.
Father of 1 son and 2 daughters, and happily married to Dixie Lee his second wife for 28 years. Semi-retired to Kentville in the beautiful Annapolis Valley NS.
Bill presented Phil with the true Rotarian award certificate. The announcement and presentation was first made virtually by our District Governor at our June 14, 2021 meeting. Congratulations Phil ... so well deserved.
Committee Reports:
Special Events (Sue): The Polio Plus event is being pushed into August. Please mark your calendars: August 21, 2021.
Youth Scholarships (Kim): It has been a challenge to get information out this year. In the end we were able to present the scholarships as part of the student’s graduation ceremonies. As a result there will not be a virtual presentation.
Tulip Coordinator (Phil): Once again Polio tulips are on sale. There are limited numbers available. Please place your orders with Phil ASAP. They are selling out quickly. We have sold 70. (And later in the meeting a commitment from Shelley for 40 more boxes. Go Shelley!!!!).
Valley Faces (Phil): $140,000 in sales is needed to reach our goal and maintain funding for our current projects. If your clients have not yet confirmed for 2021-22, please reach out to them by phone or at their place of business. Radio ads have been running since June 15 to encourage sales (and are working) but we still need your help to close the deal.

CONTINUING THE MISSION
Our Rotary year is almost over, but the continuing mission of The Rotary Foundation never ends. The programs of the Rotary Foundation are for present and future needs – educational programs, medical assistance programs, community assistance and development programs, and various self-help programs – all to improve the lives of the people of the world.
Thank you for your support of The Rotary Foundation programs and allowing “the good work” of Rotary to continue.
Chase the Ace – We have 8 cards left. The lucky number: 165 was held by Shelley F. Unfortunately, Shelley did not draw the ace. The pot continues to build. It’s over $800 now.
If you are not attending in person but want to get in on the Chase the Ace fun, please contact Sue Ueffing and she will provide details on how to pay and play!!!
The Four Way Test was led by Bill followed by the meeting adjournment.
Join us 12:00 on Monday, July 5th at Paddy’s or 12:25 via Zoom or Facebook Live for our next meeting. Russ Sanche from the Portal will be our speaker.
