Chairperson: Bill
O Canada led by Sue
Bill welcomed everyone to the meeting including visiting Rotarian: Rod McMahon (Calgary West).
Happy $$:
Sue: Happy to son Joost and Susan are on their way home from Florida.
Wally: Happy Montreal won the 6th game and there is a seventh (and deciding game) tonight.
Ellen: Happy both adult children and their babies arrived in Nova Scotia yesterday. Let the quarantining begin!
Phil: Hoping to be happy after the seventh game! And that it will be a win for Toronto.
President's Report:
Bill noted we are getting close to our fiscal yearend. It’s a time for committees to review the past year and make plans for 2021-22. As Rotarians, think about committees you’d like to join. We are hoping that many of the pandemic restrictions will be lifted and we will be able to resume activities placed on pause due to the state of emergency and health protocols.
Bill participated in the district AGM held this past Thursday. DGE Alex Twells will become the district Governor – or as he prefers – Chair of the District Leadership Team effective July 1, 2021.
Our strategy plan has been delayed due to the most recent lockdown. This has had a ripple effect on our 2021-22 budgets. Without clear priorities for the club, it is difficult to properly allocate funds to achieve goals. Stay tuned as we decide how best to proceed.
Secretary’s Report: Rick has reached out to Paddy’s regarding the NS opening plan. It will likely be the end of June before in-person meetings can resume.
Illnesses: none reported
Committee Reports:
International Services (Elva): The orphanage water and sanitation project in South Africa has been approved. The budget is between US$83,000 and US$85,000. We have recently become an international partner in the South Brazil project for mechanical ventilators. The total project is approximately US$52,000 and we have committed US$4,000. The proposal has gone to RI for approval. Finally, we are supporting a water project in Ghana. We were approached by an e-Club in Montreal about this project being led out of Virginia. It has gone to RI for approval with a estimated cost of US$135,000.
Persons with Disabilities (Carl): The committee continues to meet monthly (via zoom). The next meeting will be June 17th. Some projects have been difficult to complete due to COVID. Monies were approved to provide tuition assistance to three deserving students attending Landmark East. As well, the committee has approved financial assitance to a family to help with their child’s special needs.
Youth Scholarships (Kim): It has been a challenge to get information out to students this year and we have relied on school guidance counselors. 21 applications were received from Horton, Central Kings and Northeast Kings Educational Centre. Kentville will be supporting 6 deserving students: five attending university and one attending community college.
Valley Faces (Phil): The goal is $140,000 in sales in order to maintain our current projects budget. Sales should be wrapped up by June 30th to meet our anticipated timeline. If your clients have not yet confirmed for 2021-22, you will receive an email and fact sheet. Please reach out to them by phone or at their place of business to close the deal. They have already received emails. We need new contracts, so please think about businesses you can approach. Radio ads will begin June 15 to encourage sales.
Tulip Coordinator (Phil): Once again Polio tulips officially go on sale June 15th. There are limited numbers available. Please place your orders with Phil ASAP. It is expected they will sell out quickly. Check the news article above for more details!
Centenary Committee (Ellen): Next meeting will be held sometime near the end of June. Stay tuned.
