Garth shared that Garth Calkin’s daughter Joy Calkin (granddaughter of Thos. P. Calkin, a Charter member of our Club)  passed away recently, she was a very respected nurse!  Garth (now that's our present day Garth) noticed an item in the Club’s history 1954-55; “During the year, the program committee had a number of good speakers. In July, Joy Calkin (daughter of Garth) gave us an interesting talk about her attendance at a World Girl Guide Camp at Tonto, Sweden. Joy was a Gold Cord Guide and Nova Scotia’s representative.”

Sue is grateful and thankful for technology that allows her to read stories to her grandchildren

Carl  has concerned/sad $ for his brother who is in Northwoods Care facility, he is 80 and there is not much sharing of information on what is happening regarding the Covid 19 scenario.

President Phil's report:   Reminder that April 24-31st is Polio Week and a good time to make a donation.   Board has approved budget for next Rotary year and held dues to existing level - more details at our next business meeting!!   There have also been minor adjustment on the organizational chart which Phil will circulate via separate email.  NOTE - please advise our treasurer Kelly if you plan not to renew your membership.  This is very crucial before we commit funds to RI and District.

Guest speaker - Russ Sanche - Director Youth Outreach Association/Portal

Russ shared that it has been super challenging during our existing restrictions, physically the Portal has been closed since the end of March Break.  Where do our youth go for food, so many were getting fed at school!   They do have a list of vulnerable youth most at risk and food boxes have been provided by the Ross Creek Center and Tap Root Farms.

We are trying to keep the normal systems going, mental health is critical because of social distancing and how do we keep the kids active. There has been good liaison between hospital and especially emergency room.  Russ gave us an example of what happened to one of the kids.   Prevention needs to be community based programs that prevent youth homelessness and reduce risks. Presently we have a Family Connections worker, Host Home coordinator, Prevention coordinator and youth outreach workers.

We are expecting more domestic violence in the next 2 to 3 months as families struggle. All high schools presently have School Plus Coordinator which is supported by a mental wellness associate.

There was time for questions and Heather Lohr thanked our guest speaker for being a Champion on these programs in our Community!

Rotary Leadership Training was held via Zoom (90 participants) this past Saturday (2 hours) with Elva, Garth and Bill attending from Kentville Rotary.

He Texts - She Texts  an excerpt from article in May Rotarian Magazine as quoted from 13 year old.  " I think all in all, the phone can be a useful tool. It can also be a distraction, isolating, and mind-numbing. The important thing is to try not to be DEPENDENT on the phone.  It's a supplement to your life, not YOUR WHOLE LIFE.  I live in a world of technology.  I know I'll be using it for the rest of my life. But I hope that my children, and their children can always have a self beyond an online presence, beyond a constant stream of simulation. Everyone deserves that!!

.....  See you next week on our weekly Zoom meeting  .......
