Lufkin Rotary Honors Community Members with Paul Harris Fellowship Awards
Members of the Lufkin Rotary club packed the private dinning area at Manhattan's to honor eight outstanding community members who represent the Rotary Motto of "Service Above Self." The community members were honored with the Paul Harris Fellowship. The new fellows were chosen by Lufkin Rotarians that had given at least $1,000 to the group's humanitarian and educational programs. The eight local members were allowed to chose one person and then the board members were allowed to chose two members to give the honor to. Those honored were Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown, Brian Crews Genie Flournoy, John Fulbright III, Jerry Huffman, Kristina McCoy, Jan Anderson-Paxson and Remani V Samuel.
All the recipients took the stage with humility and praised the work of others. "Since I've been here what I have noticed is they open their hearts, they open their hands, they open their pocket books to do the things that are best for the entire community," Fulbright said. "I am honored to be selected with all these great people."
The honor is named after the Rotary founder Paul Harris. Harris founded the organization in 1905 with three fellow Chicago business associates. The Lufkin chapter started in January of 1934. Simon Henderson, Jr. was the chapter's first recipient of the honor. Henderson had 50 years of perfect attendance.
