Rotary Club of Galveston helps coordinate a city wide spelling bee for fifth graders using the UIL word list.
For more than 50 years, the Rotary Club of Galveston has helped to coordinate a city wide spelling bee for fifth graders using the UIL word list. This year, nine schools participated in the Bee which was held at Rosenberg Library in the Wortham Auditorium. All of this year's participants attend schools located on Galveston Island, however, in years past, student participants have participated from Bolivar Island. The first, second and third place winners this year are from Satori School, Austin Middle School, and Collegiate Academy at Weis respectively. Schools receive the word lists in the Fall so that the students have ample time to study. Contestants are the winners from each school's spelling bees. Members of the Club serve as judges and word caller. Every child receives a medallion and a certificate of participation. The first, second and third place finalists receive an additional medallion and a gift certificate. A special thanks goes to the staff of Rosenberg Library.
