The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County welcomed Montgomery County Pct. 4 Constable Kenneth "Rowdy" Hayden to their luncheon. Constable Hayden, a pillar of law enforcement in the area, shared insights into the multifaceted operations of the Montgomery County Pct. 4 Constable's Office. Established with a vision to serve and protect, the office has 50 sworn full-time deputies alongside dedicated reserve deputies and civilian staff. The Constable’s office serves as a vital hub for the civil process and Justice of the Peace, Pct. 4 bailiff duties.

Dr. Rose Austin, a Past District Governor (PDG) and Past President Suann Hereford, celebrated a pivotal moment for the Club by inducting three new members: Tim Zumwalt, Commissioner Matt Gray, and Rachel Burk. This marks a noteworthy milestone in the club's remarkable growth.

At the December Rotary Club of EMC Christmas luncheon, three Rotarians were honored with Paul Harris Fellow pins: Milton Austin, Debbie Needham, and Dr. Jeff Burke. The highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow is the Paul Harris Fellow. It is presented to a Rotarian or a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.  The Paul Harris Fellow Program was established by Rotary International in 1957 to show appreciation and recognize individuals who contribute, or have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.

The December 5th Rotary Club of EMC meeting was a great one! The Club presented a $6,000 check and food donations to Pamela Dickson of Mission Northeast to help families in need over the upcoming holidays.

What an incredible luncheon! The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County (EMC) hosted a bustling event, teeming with excitement. Perhaps the buzz was fueled by the induction of five new members or the presence of the esteemed guest speaker, former NFL quarterback Dan Pastorini. Regardless, it was an unforgettable gathering.

Can you spell FUN? That is what the highly anticipated Rotary Spelling Bee was! The 14th annual event was held on September 21 at the New Caney High School cafeteria, with 17 teams, 13 sponsors, and a lot of laughs! Funds raised at the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County’s Spelling Bee provide scholarships to graduating seniors from New Caney and Splendora ISDs.

Ready, aim, fire! During the second meeting of the month, the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County had the privilege of hearing from Justin Carter, co-owner of Carter’s Country, LLC. Justin, the grandson of Bill and Ellen Carter, the visionary founders of this enterprise in 1961, captivated the audience with insights gleaned from his family's wisdom. He delved into the rich history, impressive achievements, and the contemporary trials and responsibilities faced as stewards of one of the most enduring and prominent firearm retailers.

Order in the court! Or rather in the Rotary luncheon. The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County held its first meeting of September and welcomed Justice of the Peace Jason Dunn as their speaker. A former Houston police investigator and Splendora ISD board member, Jason Dunn has been the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace since January 2019. Judge Dunn described some of his duties to the Rotary club members, how Precinct 4 is growing, and the increase in court cases.

Dr. Charlie Campbell spoke on functional medicine and living your best life at the Rotary Club of EMC luncheon. Functional medicine is a system biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual's illness.

Last week, Rotary Club of East Montgomery County's (RCEMC) members heard from Huntsville Rotarian David Standlee. This quarter's focus has been on protecting the environment and providing clean water. Standlee spoke of the numerous water wells dug in Nicaragua through Rotary's sponsorships.

Rotary Club of East Montgomery County’s (RCEMC) members heard from Brian Garcia, Entergy Customer Service Manager, at their May 2nd luncheon. Entergy is an energy company that delivers electricity to 3 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and is part of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).

The theme for Rotary Club of East Montgomery County’s (RCEMC) last quarter is “Protecting the Environment and Providing Clean Water,” so it was fitting that Jonathan Smith, General Manager of the Porter Special Utility District, spoke at the April 4th luncheon. Smith explained how Porter SUD delivers safe, high-quality water services to the community and focuses on environmental conservation. RCEMC President Suann Hereford thanked Smith for speaking by donating the book “Preaching to the Chickens” by Jabari Asim in his honor to a local public school library.  For more information about the Porter Special Utility District, visit their website at portersud.com.

Rotary Club of East Montgomery County (RCEMC) members focused on disaster planning and response this quarter. Lake Conroe Division Manager Bret Raley spoke at their March 21st luncheon, providing insight into the San Jacinto River Authority’s (SJRA) role during a disaster. Raley talked about how the Conroe dam is an earth-fill embankment, 11,300 feet long, including the levees. The crest elevation of the dam is 212.0 feet above mean sea level and has a height of 82 feet above the old riverbed. A controlled emergency spillway is located near the center of the embankment. Control for the spillway consists of five tainter gates, 40 feet in width by 30 feet in height, with a top elevation of 202.5 feet. The gates are computerized and can be controlled from the control room or via an app.

Bill Davis also gave an update on our club-sponsored Rotary Scholar, Sally Yan. Davis recently vacationed in England and was able to sit down and visit with Sally Yan about her experiences and studies while at Cambridge. She is doing well and is excited to share her experiences with our club when she returns to the United States. She gifted Davis a tin of tea from the University of Cambridge, which he left for President Suann Hereford.

Jason Millsaps from the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was the February 21st Rotary speaker. Millsaps talked about OEM's role in Montgomery County, including using the old Keefer Crossing Middle School as a training facility. OEM personnel also assisted with the recent train derailment and subsequent clean-up at Fostoria and Midline Road. The Montgomery County OEM helps in disaster relief across the state and nation. One example was sending sleeping cots for emergency personnel and investigators to Uvalde after the school shooting.

After only one month in office, Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner Matt Gray spoke to the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County. Commissioner Gray also brought Community Outreach staffers Kennedy Williams and Kim Brode. The newly sworn-in commissioner gave an overview of Precinct 4 and his plans for the upcoming year, including maintaining the budget, managing the fast-paced growth, maintaining roads, and improving draining.

At the beginning of the year, Infinity Early College High School students Jose Mendez, Yendry Rojas, and Karen Sanchez participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) event. These juniors were selected by the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County and their school's faculty and administration.

RCEMC President Suann Hereford, with assistance from Past District Governor Rose Austin, distributed Paul Harris Fellow pins. This month, four Rotarians were honored with Paul Harris Fellow pins: Deitra Johnson, Melecio Franco, Tim Baker, and Jim Stubbs. The pins are for appreciation of “tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.”

The second meeting of the year for the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County (RCEMC) included information from James Fredricks of the Texas Destination Resort Alliance. James “Jim” Fredricks is a long-time resident of Montgomery County and former publisher of The Courier. Fredricks spoke to the Rotary Club about the possibility of bringing gambling to Texas.
