Supporting Literacy and Reading

ROTARY CLUB OF COLLEGE STATION SUPPORTS LITERACY AND READING – A HEADSTART TO A SUCCESSFUL LIFE
The Rotary Club of College Station stepped up for literacy in a recent check presentation to the public libraries of Bryan and College Station. Youth literacy and leadership are part of the mission of The Rotary Club of College Station and thee financial support of the libraries to provide appropriate literature, story telling hours, and books for children to have for their own is part of meeting that mission. Rotary is the largest international service organization in the world with members committed to service to their communities and development of peace across the globe.
On Friday, September 15, 2023, President Nancy Dickey, Service Chair Cherrie Pullium, and Program Coordinator for Rotary And Reading (ROAR) Nancy Downing traveled with Bea Saba, Library System Director for Brazos County to the two public libraries to make presentation of $2000.00 for each library to support the library programming for young readers.
At the Bryan Clara B Mounce Public Library, librarians Bea Saba and Elaine Platt joined Rotarians Nancy Dickey, Nancy Downing, and Cherrie Pullium to accept the check. The plan is to purchase books that will read the book to the reader in either Spanish or English particularly for those readers who do not have someone at home to read to them.
At the College Station Larry J. Ringer Library, the funds are expected to support the monthly story time hour that the library provides. Each month there is a Sunday afternoon book reading along with arts and crafts and the donation will support the purchase of needed supplies for those events. At the College Station event, librarian Bea Saba was joined by her staff Makenzie Kubacak and Derika Bailey as Rotarians Dickey, Downing and Pullium presented the check.
Literacy is a skill that is vital to successful school completion and employment. Helping children learn to read and to enjoy a lifetime of reading is an important service to the community. The partnership of public libraries and the Rotary Club of College Station helps make that happen here in the Brazos Valley.

PAINT USA!!!

Posted by Gary Thomas

ImageOn Saturday, April 20th, students from the Bush School of Government and Public Service partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Bryan, College Station, and Katy to paint a 30-foot map of the United States at Southwood Valley Elementary School. The colorful map, located next to the playground, will provide teachers with a fun, educational tool to increase their students’ knowledge of the geography of our country.

Both Rotary and the Bush School are committed to service in our community, nation, and world. Many thanks go to our volunteers: Dr. Joe Cerami, Annette Denton, Kathleen Karika, Jerry Kingsley, Marlee Kingsley, Brian McDonough, Jeff Ostrich, Melanie Passons, and Bunny Pratt.
