Cupertino Rotary Awards Poetry Contest Winners
Six rewarded at Middle and High School levels

 

June 17, 2016—CUPERTINO, CA—At the June 15th regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Cupertino, six teens were awarded cash prizes and recognized as winners of this premier Rotary teen poetry contest.  

 

The theme, Be a Gift to the World, generated 85 entries from five middle schools and five high schools. Junior high winners are:  (click on each line below to read the actual poem)

“This new project gives students in our local schools an artistic outlet,” said Irmgard Lafrentz,   initiator and member of the Rotary Club of Cupertino Youth Committee. “The objective is to showcase the many young artists we have in our community, and raise awareness for the greater good.”

 

Past Cupertino Poets Laureate Dave Denny, Jennifer Swanton Brown and Amanda Williams selected the three winners in each category. Each winner read her poem on June 15 and received a prize depending on standing of $100, $50, or $25 from Rotary Club president Wendell Stevens and Savita Vaidhyanathan, past president and City Council member.

 

The Cupertino Poet Laureate program is sponsored by the City of Cupertino, the Cupertino Library Commission, the Cupertino Library Foundation and The Friends of the Cupertino Library.
