Jeff is a native of Fergus Falls, MN and graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from North Dakota State University. He joined VAA Engineering, one of Minnesota’s leading multi-disciplinary engineering firms, in 2006 as Senior Civil Engineer and was challenged with building the civil engineering group. The business expanded exponentially and he was named CEO in 2014. He brings an analytical approach in his technical responsibilities and a personable nature to fostering business. He continues to enhance the vision of a firm that values strong work ethic and provides notable career development opportunities for employees.
Jeff started off by claiming, “Everybody in the office is smarter than I am.” There are 10 partners in the firm which has grown significantly since its inception in 1978.
Most of the firm’s work is done outside MN.
They have three areas of focus: Agribusiness, commercial buildings, and industrial buildings.
Nothing that the proportion of Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Generation X is changing, he set up a 5 year plan to better understand how all can work together and operate a successful business. He also noted the proportion of female employs is low but increasing. The goals became: 100% employee engagement, create a culture of teamwork, and expand the company’s influence in the community.
The latter is exemplified by the creation of a Wellness and Outreach Committee and a Community Caring Campaign. Last year they contributed over $53,000 to two local charities.
He notes successes include the focus on knowledge transfer (older employees working with younger employees), creating a collaborate work environment, and an increase in national and international work projects.
One of the remaining problems is employee retention which is less than the state wide figure. It’s difficult to fill positions requiring 3D software skills. Millennials tend to move often but he’s hopeful to mentor more younger employees to stay.
