Invocation

Tony N. - We need to remember to reflect on who we are and how we got there, the trials, the loss, the hardships. We all have them. Reflecting can go either way, good or bad. We say good first because that’s what we want more. Someone has had bigger hardships than I and I remember that every down moment is an opportunity to learn. Be positive and accept the message and be wiling to learn from it. On the other side of a down moment, it is a good opportunity.

Program

Gunel Kristhan – Immigrated from Azerbaijan

“Story of an immigrant women who is finding her way in this wonderful country”
Came as a life-long learner and accomplished professional
“Unseen” -when you immigrate nobody sees you, speaks your language, understands your culture or shares your traditions

Challenging to be a newcomer
Born in Russia and speaks Russian (amongst many other languages)
Azerbaijan is a small diverse country north of Iran (similar to Dubai)
Left in late 20’s as a well-known celebrity – hosted television show, was in movies
Left everything behind because American Dream is bigger than what she was living in.

Parents were children of wealthy family (had everything she ever wished for)

When USSR collapsed the country was in a war – food was scarce and went to having everything to losing so much. (mom used diamonds and gems to get necessities for the children)

Everything disappeared, but family remained constant

Parents promised to do everything possible to come to the USA. Coming here was an opportunity to become a new person. Coming from a country where she was famous to a country where she was unknown

Arrived with basic English skills and decreased self-confidence

Ultimately moved to MN in 2010 and pursued a second decree – became really involved with International Student Organization – traveled, learned, experienced new things together. Provided great support

The International Student Organization was a huge support system. Provided family, resources, and a home away from home.
Wants all immigrants to have the opportunity to create this same type of support system.

After graduation was still struggling to fit-in – started a Blog “Every Azeri” that grew very quickly amongst the immigrant community
Women’s rights/goals (came from a Country where success if based upon supporting their men). Gunnel was not interested in that kind of life. She pursued education and strength and decided to move to US and leave the suppressive life

Immigrant women have so much in common. Learned this through the blog which grew into a YouTube Channel.

Decided to change focus in order to provide more opportunities (and income). Got involved in health care system. Could see the struggles of those without a lot of resource. Master’s in health care administration at Concordia. Was still trying to find herself

Combined passion for education and bringing people together, and recognizing culture by starting the Azerbaijani Association of Minnesota non-profit – raised awareness, raised money for students, involved in local activities, invited to organization national rally in DC, received Azerbaijani Presidential Medal
Finished Master’s Degree - started volunteering in ER department, struggled to find the right job, and couldn’t find something that complimented experience, education, and background

Created own company which provided the ability to work as an Independent Contractor – Glem Big Solutions. Keynote speaking and event support for organizations that work with immigrant women. Has not done this alone “there is no sound with one hand”. www.gleambig.com  Using voice to inspire others to set a course and succeed. Inspire people to achieve American Dream. Provides perspective to Americans about the immigrant experience

How can you create a more welcoming environment to immigrants and how does that provide you with benefit
