Meeting

Opening

After ringing the meeting to order, President Stacey Q. shared a few comments re: her attendance last night at an ecumenical rally at Temple Israel in Minneapolis. Our state’s top officials stood in unity with local Jewish leaders to denounce a recent rash of anti-Semitic hate crimes including one targeting a Rotarian in our District. Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan pledged their support and stressed the importance of banding together in the face of hate. Stacey reminded us of Rotary’s Four Way Test and the need to speak out against hate crimes. “Silence is complicity.”

Invocation

Bob F. told the story of 2 brothers: The Optimist and the Pessimist. The Optimist is still looking for the pony in the pile of manure gifted from his father! He closed with a prayer attributed to Mother Theresa which ends “. . . the fruit of love is service and the fruit of service is peace.”

Rotary Minute

Cathy C. read a letter to the editor of Prior Lake News which was submitted by local Rotarian Harry Algyer. He explained how Rotary’s Four Way Test can be a wonderful way to live out our professional and personal lives in the new year. “Number FOUR: Is it beneficial to all concerned.” When two parties are involved in conflict, the final settlement can be viewed as a success if both parties are satisfied and neither felt they got the better deal.

Jennifer S. – Hopkins Education Foundation’s annual fundraiser set for Feb. 22, “Royal Bash,” raffle tickets will be available next week; looking for event sponsors – contact Jennifer S.

Alexa R. – District 5950 Mid-term Assembly set for January 18, 9 AM-1 PM; Minnetonka Community Center; free to club members – sign up online – see club web page; volunteers needed to help with registration, set-up, take-down, ushering. Contact Alexa R. if available.

Stacey Q. – We have our twice monthly ICA service project on January 18 also. Thank you to those who helped with the Lunds/Byerly’s Holiday Cart service project. Club gets $400 from L/B for completion. Looking for picture of club members who attended the Rotary breakfast at Hoagies in Hopkins during the holiday break. There were at least 12 in attendance. Somebody help, please!

Scott J. – polio jug circulating. We need to collect $2000 over our total from last year in order to qualify for additional funds via D5950. We are on track to make the goal!

Bill S. – Polio campaign will be boosted by night at Unmapped Brewing on May 6. They will donate $1 for every beer sold that night to our polio jug. Last year they sent us a check for $250.

Floriane N. – greenhouses at Nibakure Community Village in Rwanda doing very well – lots of produce to sell at the local market. Hoping to get funding to construct 2 more greenhouses.

Ben M. – A fund to support Pete G’s family after daughter Kailey’s tragic accident before Christmas has been set up at MN Bank and Trust. Make checks out to Pete or Kailey Giancola and send to Ben. Pete’s sister, Lisa Kimlinger, is hosting a brainstorming session January 12 from 1-3 PM to explore additional ways to help Pete and his family. Miss Katie had the winning ticket (should never have left the club, girl!) but didn’t pull the joker. Claims she hadn’t gotten up this early in the morning for 6 months.

Happy Bucks

Jim M. – attended wedding of nephew in NC.

Regina R. – surprise visit of son on Christmas Day.

Chris R. – excited about new job (oldest dude in the office!), hockey season going well.

Jacob M. – lovely Christmas holiday in Jamaica, enjoyed the crew at Hoagies.

Therese K. – also enjoyed vacation in Jamaica with 15 family members, girls back in school!

Mike G. – thanks for good wishes after arduous campaign for Sec.-Elect.

Floriane N. – greenhouses in Rwanda producing veges for sale, leaving Sunday for Rwanda.

Terry S. – had 24 persons and 4 dogs at Christmas, all packed away now.

Kathy C. – thanks to Bob for organizing breakfast at Hoagies, leaving for sunny climes and returns in Feb.

Char M. – something about $8 million check to The Moline. I dunno. Ask Bill S.

Katie Williams – last 6 months just flew by! Received card from our exchange student Mayuka,; moving to WI, daughter graduated from St. Thomas and moved to California.

Alexa R. – happy to see Katie today, glad Christmas is OVER!

Alex R. – Katie Williams will receive the MN Community Education Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2020!!!!!! We always knew she was the best of the best. New Spanish immersion preschool/K to open at Eisenhower next year.

Bill S. – had a good time at Hoagies with the crew over holiday break.

Nancy D. – daughter in Boston has started her own business – home organization service.

Glen J. – decided old jeans full of holes are not to be tossed out as suggested by wife but rather celebrated as being in style, for sure!

Lenny – Son/niece/nephew enjoying trip in Israel, 12 year old family dog recently died but the 13 year old dog is doing OK.

Roger J. – enjoying the longer days since Dec 21.

Mary T. – happy to see Katie again, happy to have granddaughter speaking to club this morning.

Ron U. – family from Taiwan was here over holidays, introduced to snow skiing, and now moved to Oregon.

Mark Marlin – happy (he thinks) to report to grand jury duty next week. Could be a marathon.

Sam S. – great holiday in Arizona with family including dad.

That’s 22 members willing to stand up and say they are happy. Incredible way to start 2020.

Program

Introduction by Mary T. – AKA Grandma. Sydney Koehler is a student at Boston College. She is majoring in English and political science within a pre-law track and will graduated in 2020. Her current focus is working to understand the sexual assault and rape culture on college campuses and educating students to effectively respond.

Model program developed at Harvard. Freshmen students are educated on how to be an active bystander. This is challenging when 8 or more students are bystanders because the more the bystanders, the less likely any one student is going to actively respond to change the trajectory.

Sexual assault is actually an umbrella term and covers as least 8+ behaviors.

Bystanders are taught to note the red flags of a crisis situation: Sexist attitudes, high risk drinking, tunnel vision and targeting, and isolation.

Intervention can take many forms: Create a diversion, Ask directly, Refer to the authorities, Enlist others. (CARE)

Some areas are teaching these concepts in the secondary schools. A bill was presented in the MN legislature last term that would fund such a program but it did not pass.

A brief Q & A followed.

President Stacey thanked our speaker and gave her a “highly coveted” Rotary light up pen.

Mac H. announced that we raised $89 today for building responsible youth.
