  • Please check the Upcoming Events section, as there are opportunities for Books for Africa, Loaves and Fishes and ICA.
  • On behlaf of our club's foundation, Jacob Milner presented a check to Urban Boatbuilders, which works with disadvantaged teens to help them acquire trade skills and a love of the outdoors by building wooden boats for rowing and sailing.
  • A club board meeting has now been set for January 18 at Hopkins Commons.
  • The District 5950 MidTerm Assembly will be Jan. 26 at the Minnetonka Community Center.  Sign up if interested.
  • Donna and Darlyne will be hosting a polio fundraiser at Unmapped Brewery in Excelsior on Wed. Jan 16 from 5-8 PM.
  • Since the Rotary year began last July 1st, our club members have volunteered their time for 20 different activities, and our club has allocated its money to roughly 10 different domestic and international projects.   We are also on track to raise $3000 for polio eradication by April 30.  Well done!

Jennifer St. Clair had the right ticket but drew a cold hand on the card; the raffle rolls over with $102.

Dr. Don Draayer and Dr. Sylvia Sekhon both have decades of experience with early childhood education and development. They gave a very thorough  talk on behalf of Reach Out and Read, a non-profit organization first started in Boston in 1989, and then begun in Minnesota in 1997.

Both speakers stressed the need for children younger than 5 to not only receive good health care and nutrition, but also good mental and emotional development. About 80% of brain development occurs by the end of the 3rd year, and 90% by the end of the 5th year. It is exceedingly important to deal with the problems of substance abuse by parents, and then parents should also introduce their children to speaking, listening, singing, viewing pictures, and reading at a very young age.

Reach Out And Read works to promote these activities through book donation drives and public education.
