Happy New Year to all!
Dr. Don Draayer and Dr. Sylvia Sekhon both have decades of experience with early childhood education and development. They gave a very thorough talk on behalf of Reach Out and Read, a non-profit organization first started in Boston in 1989, and then begun in Minnesota in 1997.
Both speakers stressed the need for children younger than 5 to not only receive good health care and nutrition, but also good mental and emotional development. About 80% of brain development occurs by the end of the 3rd year, and 90% by the end of the 5th year. It is exceedingly important to deal with the problems of substance abuse by parents, and then parents should also introduce their children to speaking, listening, singing, viewing pictures, and reading at a very young age.
Reach Out And Read works to promote these activities through book donation drives and public education.
