Alexa R. introduced the speaker, Liz Dayton with WSSS.
WSSS is a program administered by Intermediate District 289.
The District focus is on specialized education and enrichment programs, including Destination Imagination, and Fairly Mathly, a creative online math program.
WSSS is designed for students in grades 2-12, identified by their teachers as having a high passion for learning, and is an invitation only program. It offers unique education experiences and challenges and allows students to explore areas of interest.
The program lasts 5 weeks, in June and July, with full day classes 5 days per week.
The courses are designed by the instructors.
The schools are in 4 locations, in Richfield, Wayzata, Osseo and Brooklyn Center, with a total of 2000 students enrolled.
The program offers 115 classes led by 46 instructors. Average class size is 8-16 students. Course catalog will be available in February. They are currently recruiting teachers for next year; teaching certificates are not required.
Course options include Board and Video game design and strategy; Yoga; Writing; Debate; Computer Design and Coding; Theater Arts.
The program is fee based - $250 per week or more depending on field trip and extra material required, for member district students; $290 for students from non-member districts. Scholarships are available on request - sponsorship opportunity for Rotary!
