Exchange Student (Gaia) Update
Alexa R.  asked Gaia to share details of the 5950/5960 Northstar Youth Exchange exhibition where 40-50 nations were represented, inviting students interested in being an exchange student to learn about different options.
Each country had a booth with pictures of various sightseeing and cultural attractions and different kinds of food.
Alexa R. introduced the speaker, Liz Dayton with WSSS.
WSSS is a program administered by Intermediate District 289.
The District focus is on specialized education and enrichment programs, including Destination Imagination, and Fairly Mathly, a creative online math program.
WSSS is designed for students in grades 2-12, identified by their teachers as having a high passion for learning, and is an invitation only program.  It offers unique education experiences and challenges and allows students to explore areas of interest.
The program lasts 5 weeks, in June and July, with full day classes 5 days per week.
The courses are designed by the instructors.
The schools are in 4 locations, in Richfield, Wayzata, Osseo and Brooklyn Center, with a total of 2000 students enrolled.
The program offers 115 classes led by 46 instructors.  Average class size is 8-16 students. Course catalog will be available in February.  They are currently recruiting teachers for next year; teaching certificates are not required.
Course options include Board and Video game design and strategy; Yoga; Writing; Debate; Computer Design and Coding; Theater Arts.
The program is fee based - $250 per week or more depending on field trip and extra material required, for member district students; $290 for students from non-member districts.  Scholarships are available on request - sponsorship opportunity for Rotary!
The club raised $12 for Polio and $51 from Raffle.
