Program
Speaker - Matt Rosen, with his own project and business, Sergeant Shortbread
Matt had a 23-year Service career, and then several years with CH Robinson. Awhile ago in Hawaii, he spotted a Honolulu Cookie Stand. He loved the cookies, but didn’t want to pay the shipping costs.
Life was about to change!
Matt began to make cookies for himself and for friends. His first batches were Christmas cookies, but not a success. He switched to shortbread, like the Hawaiian cookies. These they loved, and he began making more. He went to Farmer’s Markets, and orders were coming in. He fell in love with baking, and added granola bars, Bundt cakes, etc. Baking and selling were going so well, he decided to quit his other job.
He re-branded his company to Sergeant Shortbread, and moved into a commercial kitchen. He does everything himself, no employees. He switched from ‘Cottage Food’ status to commercial so he could start shipping the cookies. Despite his wife’s warnings about burnout, he has found much joy and satisfaction in the process.
Some questions for Matt revealed that his service was infantry, airborne (jumping), and a specialty of electronics, we gather, during the Gulf war. Matt is involved with mentoring, and goes to high schools to help teach business and life skills. His cookies are found at Grace Church café, Bear Cave Brewery, and several coffee shops if you just want a taste. Lemon Blueberry is his biggest seller.
Thank you, Matt for an interesting talk and a story about how life can take us in a different direction, with great success and happiness. And keep Building Responsible Youth with your work as a Mentor.
