Cathy C. - Cathy Carlson pointed out Rotary wants all members to help in membership recruitment. New members should be involved in service projects early. Clubs should also reach out to past members to see if they are interested in rejoining.

From Cathy C.- Benefits and Responsibilities of Club Membership #2 Membership Recruitment and Retention

To keep clubs strong, every Rotarian must share the responsibility of bringing new people into Rotary. Even new members can bring guests to meetings or invite them to participate in a service project. The value of Rotary speaks for itself, and the best way to spark the interest of potential members is by letting them experience our fellowship and service firsthand.

Keeping members interested in Rotary is another responsibility. Good club fellowship and early involvement in service projects are two of the best ways to sustain the club’s membership. Yes, our fellowship is somewhat limited due to the COVID invasion but the ZOOM club meetings can be our catalyst to stay connected and carry on our whole purpose.

The ideal composition of a Rotary club reflects the community’s demographics, including professions, gender, age, and ethnicity. Such diversity enriches every aspect of the club’s fellowship and service.

Chris C. – The Golf Committee is planning a Sept 10 golf fundraiser at Glen Lake Golf Course for up to 9 foursomes. The cost will be $100/player. They are looking into other things to give to golfers. There won’t be a get together afterward due to health concerns. They need a count of who is going within 2 days to reserve the date. See a follow-up email you will receive from Bob H.

Nancy D. – The Foundation approved 3 grants yesterday.
1)   $2,000 to the Assistance League of Mpls/St.Paul to help low income families with education expenses.
2)   $1,000 for Solar panels at hospital in Madagascar. They currently can only get electricity for 3 hours/day.
3)   $500 for Nicaragua COVID 19 PPE and Health Education

Pete G. – Got tickets to fly down to Atlanta to return with his daughter and medical equipment.

Cathy C. – Her golden grandson who is interning at John Hopkins is going mountain climbing on the west coast.

Char M. – spent time at cabins at Crooked Lake near Aitkin & Door County

Darlyne E. – is now able to raise her arm after hard work following her bike injury.

Nancy D. – Went to the Galaxy Driven – They have good food & great 60’s/70’s music.

Bob H. – His Brainerd Golf group is celebrating their 27th anniversary. He is the chairperson for the coming year.

Ron U. – Discovered a climbing lesson – It’s far easier to fly to the top of a mountain (rather than climb up) then hike down. Let gravity be your friend.

Floriane N. – 11 piglets were born this week in her village (more than expected)

Chris C. – Chris and his daughter spent time at their cabin & went swimming in Lake Itasca

Program

Ron Usem introduced Jack Lee (Executive Director) at the Voyageur Outward Bound School.

Jack got is B.S. from Univ. of Notre Dame & MBA from Univ. of Michigan. After business careers in commercial banking & finance at Intel, he changed his focus on non-profits. He worked as President of Youth Frontiers prior to joining Voyageur Outward Bound School (VOBS).

He is a member at the Edina Morningside Rotary.

Voyageur Outward Bound attempts to get participants out of their comfort zone to aid in developing resilient & compassionate leaders. VOBS often says they want Crew not Passengers.

They are an international organization with 11 locations in the U.S. that server 35,000 students.

They have programs for teenagers, young adults & adults. They offer these through 3 channels:
1)   Individual Registration
2)   Group Programs for Universities, Healthcare and Businesses.
3)   Twin City Centers – focused on urban teens. Their Intercept program focuses on youth making bad decisions. They involve the entire family in modifying this behavior.

VOBS usually receives the majority of their funds via tuition and some donations. With cancellation of these programs because of COVID their income is down 90%.

They will be starting up some programs in September.

VOBS' goal is to develop positive leaders that are comfortable taking risks and focused on service to others.
