Tony N. - be sure to RSVP for the meeting on Dec 13th (2 weeks) for the speaker, David Schultz We need a head count for seating. Bring your friends. Thank you to those 12-13 mentioned who helped with the Lunds Byerlys shopping carts. $400 to our club.
Alexa R. - Socials. Coffee Morning at Caribou on Hwy 7 and Hopkins X-Road; This Saturday. 8:00 AM. Breakfast at Hoagies on Monday, Dec 11 at 7:30 AM. $30 for breakfast, and the balance to the staff. Jersey Boys show at Chanhassen, sometime in Jan or Feb. No date set yet.
Tony N. - showed a video with RI President Gordon McInally. A seashell from Thailand was displayed, signifying a terrible flood. Despite much destruction and loss of life, Rotary helped rebuild homes to those who lost them. One woman said Rotary restored her hope and optimism. This was where Pres Gordon coined our 2023-24 theme, ‘Create Hope in the World’.

Program
Speaker; Kristina Burrack. An Immunologist at the U of M, and Asst Professor there.
Her topic today and major study work in on Malaria.
There are 247 million cases of Malaria in the world, and 600,000 deaths (per year?) It is especially bad for kids under 5 years old, and with pregnant women.
We needs better vaccines, and other strategies to control the carrier, the Mosquito.
Malaria is carried by a parasite, which gets into the bloodstream with bites. Once into the red blood cells, it can create 1000’s more parasites. The symptoms can be mild (headaches, fever chills) or severe (Brain, coma, kidneys). Young children most likely to die, and miscarriages.
There had been a steady decline since 2000, but a recent uptick in the last few years. It had been almost all in rural setting, but now in major cities; probably from more immigration.
Mosquitos are now getting more resistant to insecticides; they are breeding in more places with climate change. “The Mosquitos are Winning” is a title of book about Kristina’s work.
Kristina discussed some of the good news that mice studies and lymph system research is showing promise. It may be possible to neutralize mosquitos so they cannot transmit or replicate as easily.
She is involved with Empowering Women in Science, and Homeward Bound, about more women needed in S T E M education.
