Polio Update - It's been 31 years since Rotary decided that eradicating polio would be their global initiative. Cases went from 350,000 in 125 countries in 1988 to 33 cases in 2 countries in 2018. Nigeria will be celebrating 3 years without an outbreak of polio which will get them removed from the list. Our annual club fundraising goal is $3000; we still need $300 in the next 2 months to make this happen.
Floriane sent new photos, the school bus is going to get back up and running with new tires, water pump and speed governor.
Rotary Foundation meeting is coming up on Thurs. March 21 at the Moline.
Community Service - Jennifer St. Clair announced that Loaves & Fishes event is coming up March 19; we have too many people signed up so Jennifer will be sending out an email to move folks around.
Freja Sorensen returned early to Denmark, but on her last day she made slime!
Rotary has a new Leasership Fellowship Program called Signature. It is up on the web site and is available for signups now. It will be available to 25 students this fall, with 5 sessions of 4 hours each and each student gets their own coach.
ICA opportunity. All new volunteers need to undergo training. Glenn Juntti will be arranging to have a 20 minute training here after a meeting.
Our donated raffle artwork (see picture from last week) is called "Hot Mess Garden" and is created by dropping bits of paint on the surface and then blowing on the paint. Each raffle ticket is $1 so put your money in the jar and your name on a ticket. All proceeds will fund polio eradication.
Darlyne Erickson shared information about the progressive dinner. We lost a host so is this still viable for our club? This would be a summer event - late June or so. We need three houses for appetizer, dinner and dessert. We typically have ~40 people so we need people with large houses to volunteer. Bill Sorteberg raised his hand and volunteered his mansion.
Nancy D. - Sister in law slipped on the ice and spent the afternoon in the ER in Rochester; she had a hairline fracture but didn't hit her head.
Carolyn A. - Happy that Mayuka is coming to stay with her this month.
Lenny N. - Happy about the 5 polar plungers: Bill, Jerald, Alexa, Cameron and Mr. Newman himself.
Sam S. - Flying to Phoenix to see his grandchildren for his 67th birthday.
Chris R. - Axel's hockey tourney. Banquet, games, boys, news. Grateful for all the support. Largest single high school tourne even of any sport in this country. [side note: this was the last year for the All Hair Hockey Team, unless someone else steps up].
Ron U. - would rather be giving a million. Grateful for Rotary, our fellow Rotarians, the 4 Way Test and the values of the people in our club.
Frank B. - Henry Bromelkamp visited our club a month or 2 ago. Sunday he was in a bad scooter accident in Colorado; emergency surgery and he is alive, they're hoping there isn't any permanent damage.
Bill S. - one for having a birthday on the same day as Sam, one for Axel Rosenlund's awesome hockey game, one for the holiest day that we are celbrating tomorrow (St. Patrick's Day) and one because his son is coming home from Afghanistan.
Mark M. - Happy that Carolyn is taking Mayuka and sad that Freja has left. $500 for 2 oversized suitcases or for $100 she can fly first class to Chicago and then her luggage will go free all the way to Denmark.
Darlyne E. - Applied for a small business loan for her small company and yesterday signed the loan.
Jennifer St. C - Many people to thank for the Hopkins Education Foundation 19th Annual Royal Bash. They raised $310,000 for Hopkins Public Schools. Many sponsors and volunteers.
Bill K. - Successful ski trip, 39 inches of snow in 36 hours.
Trish A. - One for her cutest mother on the planet, she's a great optimist and wants to be up and about, even with a broken leg. One of Trish's former MBA students is having a baby and Trish and her husband will stand as godparents, plus the baby is due on Trish's birthday.
Char M. - Cathy at Empty Bowls event, they were in the kitchen all day and no one knew they were there.
Dale F. - Completed the 21st annual Empty Bowls. 1800-2000 people attended. Thanks to the 14 Rotary members that helped clean up. Mike Glover vacuumed so hard he broke a belt on the vacuum. Our club contributed $7000 for this event.
Regina R. - Enjoyed the Empty Bowls event has the winning gift for Katie Williams and wanted to prettily wrap it for her.
Stacey Q. - PETs in Ames IA. Alexa is going too. Asking for energy and prayers.
Justin C. - His alumni group from Florida State went to Second Harvest; they packed over 11,000 pounds of food.
Ron L. - Sorry that our speaker couldn't make it today but happy to have us speaking with each other and time for happy bucks.
Katie W. - Hopkins High School choir concert on this (now past) Thurs and Mayuka will singing.
Our scheduled speaker,Clyde Deopner, the curator for the MN Twins, was not able to make it today due to road conditions.
Alexa stepped up to give a presentation about infectious diseases, which is something she does for Scott Country.
Boiling down a 2 1/2 hour presentation to 20 minutes: Bacteria and viruses are everywhere, and they need hosts. Incubation periods are important, typically 2 weeks when you are contagious; by the time you're showing symptoms you likely no longer contagious. Diseases are tracked so that they can be stopped. TB is having a huge outbreak around our city right now, Chicken pox, measles, whooping cough, and 5th disease are making a resurgence but are easily prevented with the appropriate vaccines.
