Rotary Minute by Cathy Carlson concerned the RI president and recounted her visit to RI convention in 1994-95 in Taipai. This year’s RI convention is also in Taipai.
Prior to 1980 most RI presidents from the USA. Now approximately every third year the RI president is from the USA.
March Rotary magazine conducted an interview of the new RI president from India. Key points of the interview.
Presidency at the club level is the best job in Rotary; more impact in short time.
“Serve to Change Lives” is the new RI slogan for this year and it was developed by a team.

March 3, 2021 ROTARY MINUTE
This “Minute” is actually about an interview with again Shekhar Mehta, our incoming RI President. The March Rotary magazine did a ZOOM meeting with Shekhar from India, an 8000 mile distance, that gives a pretty good picture of the person that will run Rotary this next year.
One of two items I would like to share today is how he answered this question – Is the Rotary presidency the best job in Rotary? He said “The presidency at the club level is the best job you can have in Rotary. You do far more at far greater speed as club president than you do as RI president. You get to have the pleasure of doing hands-on work.
The second question I want to share is this one. Did you come up with your theme by yourself? He was asked.
I actually shared the theme with you last week. “Serve to Change Lives”
“No. With me it’s always about teamwork. I love to take everybody’s views. There were about 10 of us in the room. It truly reflects my philosophy in Rotary. I wanted it to be service, but people said it should be a call to action. So service became serve. And when you do that, you change lives for the good. So, the theme is: Serve to Change Lives.”

Announcements
Char M. - announced as of 3/3/2021 Minnetonka Rotary has raised $4129.50 for Polio Plus; shooting for $5,000 by the end of April. Mac reminded us that number is matched two times, so lots of bang for our collective bucks.
Dale F. - discussed Empty Bowls and disclosed over $19,000 raised by Minnetonka Rotary for ICA and Resource West.
Jennifer S. - complimented Alexa for organizing Empty Bowls Happy Hour. A fun event for all who attended.
Ron U. - announced upcoming online Zoom magic show and we need funds to pay the magician. Anne suggested using fundraiser account to pay for the magician.
Patti S. - announced that the Sun/Sailor will be doing a story on Minnetonka Rotary’s fundraising efforts and was looking for someone to talk to the reporter.
Bob H. - discussed the raffle wherein we raffled off Green Egg smokers. Now we are looking for a smokeless firepit and/or a grill. We will purchase the smokeless firepit and the owner “John” will donate a $700 Weber grill. Store donating is located in the Sundial Shopping Center.
Chris C. - reminded all that the mock skydiving event is later today with possible happy hour thereafter. Chris also discussed thank you received from Loaves & Fishes for donation made by Minnetonka Rotary. “Rotary does it again.”
Nancy D. - discussed Rotary Foundation plans to purchase a van for Resource West. We are working in concert with two other clubs to underwrite the purchase.

Speaker/Program:
Christine Leick grew up in West St. Paul which is actually south of St. Paul and South St. Paul is east of St. Paul. Discussed her youth on her family’s evergreen tree farm. Attended Visitation through 12th grade. Father suggested that a profession was needed to take care of herself. Became a family law litigator but became disillusioned and after 17 years joined the collaborative law movement which then led to mediation. Mediated for 21 years until 2011 when contracted cancer and during this time walked on fire in Glastonbury U.K. Very fun and a highlight. Married for 23 year to Guy Marzano and close to step-children.
Retired in 2011 due to cancer. Went through significant treatment and is now 6 years cancer free. Was athletic in youth, tennis, swimming and skiing but now misses it but now enjoys watching sports.
Mark Magney. This is his 4th vocational one each in 1990’s, 2000’s, 2010’s and 2020’s Graduated from Eisenhower, attended UMD and U of M with degree in civil engineering but also took business courses. First construction job working on Wells Fargo Bank in Hopkins. First car 1969 Fiat Spider (Spyder?). 1979 took two month trip to Europe with Tammy on Eurail pass prior to marriage with Tammy’s architecture class from Montana State. Spent time constructing waste water plant. Worked for father’s construction business until 1986 when left to work for large general contractor until 1994 building waste water plants. 1994 started Magney Construction which is a general contractor with lots of work for public entities. 50 to 65 employees. We are successful because of the people who work for us. Core group of employees have worked for company for over 10 years. Photos of projects of notoriety were shared. Enjoys work to this day but working on an exit strategy. Children and their spouses live in Ketchum, Idaho and Sacramento, CA where they are teachers (Ketchum) and college professors (UC Davis). Technology is the biggest change in the business over the last 30 years.

3. From Nancy D. - Minnetonka Rotary Foundation meeting February 2, 2021 - Community updates from ICA, Resource West, and Relate Counseling
MRF had an opportunity to hear from Dan Narr, Executive Director of ICA Food Shelf, Tarrah Palm, Executive Director of Resources West, and Becky McNattin of Relate Counseling during our monthly meeting. The information they shared was sobering but also presents a challenge to us.
From Dan Narr: ICA has ample food supplies and is doing another mass food distribution on Feb 20. They have great volunteer support. They are ordering more food from Great Harvest and other suppliers as food rescue using volunteers is much more challenging in these times. Rent and utility assistance requests are up 800%. ICA receives assistance from Hennepin County and the City of Minnetonka but the City of Hopkins has no further funds. Clients are looking for employment assistance and there is a FT employment counselor on staff. Any job leads would be greatly appreciated.
From Tarrah Palm: The pandemic crisis and its fallout highlights problems that were already present. RW is helping families new to the system navigate options including unemployment insurance. Government safety nets are not enough to meet the need. Families will take years to get back to their “normal.” Academic support for students is crucial. Helping families stay in stabile housing is critical.
From Beck McNattin: Relate Counseling had planned for an increase in services prior to the pandemic. Since schools are meeting virtually, teachers are less able to see the needs of students and referring for help. They have expanded their program to 6 school districts (was 3) and are using more interns to meet needs. They are working to help families access health insurance but no one is turned away for lack of funds. All therapies are delivered virtually – office, home, or front seat of a car.
Following these presentations, MRF voted to create a $6000 challenge grant for Empty Bowls. This annual event benefits both ICA and Resource West and they can jointly decide how best to use the funds. We will address issues raised by Relate Counseling at our March 16 meeting.
