Eradication of polio in Africa. August 25th WHO announced that wild polio virus has been stopped in all 47 countries of Africa. Historical achievement! Example of strong commitment resulting in positive outcomes. Rotary has committmec $9M over the years. Now looking at how to apply these lessons to the fight against COVID 19.

“On 25 August, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.”
Rotary, and yes, WHO, the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance proclaimed this historic achievement in public health. They offered it as proof that a strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance could rid the world of the disease.
Since 1996, when Rotary teamed up with Nelson Mandela and his Kick Polio Out of Africa campaign, Rotary members around the world have contributed $900 M and countless volunteer hours towards eradication in that region. More than 9 billion doses of oral polio vaccine have been provided throughout that region, preventing an estimated 1.8 million cases of paralysis.
Where am I going with this? Several outlets involved are now looking at how to apply the lessons of polio eradication to the fight against COVID-19. And yes, Rotary is up to the challenge.

Chris C. - Wife went away for weekend and he had a great weekend with his daughter watching movies. One movie included Fairy Land Cottages in Detroit Lakes where Chris spent time in his youth.

Alissa O. introduced our speaker Mike Silva from Skydiving Adventures (also Alissa’s husband!)
Mike is professional skydiver and body flight coach.
Shared videos of dives over Baldwin, WI
He has 17 years of experience and over 3000 skydives. 10,000 hours of experience in wind tunnel and instructs military as well as public students.
He and Alissa participate in National Skydiving Championships.
Mike also participates in Base Jumping.
He states that flying is the ultimate mix of freedom and expression.
There is a wind tunnel facility at Ridgedale, I Fly Ridgedale. Mike teaches there.
Mike presented an explanation and a picture of the design of the wind tunnel at Ridgedale. Film clips demonstrated how the wind tunnel works – winds can be up to 170 MPH. Cheaper, more comfortable and safe way to learn the skills of skydiving. All ages can participate ( 3 to 103!) Variety of social events can be held there also.
Students are provided with complete introduction and instruction before experiencing the wind tunnel.
Outdoor instruction is also available. The wind tunnel gives excellent opportunity for instruction before jumping outside.
Mike participated in a vertical world record jump in 2012. There were 138 people involved – great photo and video was presented. It was an 18-20,000 foot jump with oxygen. Two year endeavor to prepare for this jump. Coordination was a major challenge and required skill and practice.
Lessons learned: Coach the positive, Never give up, Always set big goals.
