Rotary Minute
Rotary Minute from Cathy Carlson: “STEP UP, IT IS YOUR TIME TO SHINE!!” Every year, make sure you are involved in our club: on a committee, in line to be President, volunteering for service projects and remember we are all on the membership committee. We are very fortunate to have a “permanent” treasurer in Mac. Also fortunate that we can have 4 people in the presidential line (Sect. Elect, Sect., President Elect and President). Many clubs struggle with is.
Announcements
Jennifer S. - Bikes 4 Kids; on Sat. we had 15 Rotary volunteers cleaning and fixing donated bikes. Our groups finished btw. 35-45 bikes. Once complete, they go into a room where there are over 5000 bikes that get donated to kids in the metro area.
Jennifer S. - Resource West: tomorrow-12/9/21, from 4-6 pm we are helping with the present give a way. So far have 5 volunteers, can have up to 9. If you can help, let Jennifer St. Claire know or sign up on the link she sent.
Chris Carr - Mtka Rotary Foundation: Chris Carr is having a foundation mtg. Tues., 12/14/21 about 1 pm. He will be sending out a zoom invite. McPhail’s CEO Kyle Carpenter sent a thank you for the $2,000 grant we gave them. The ICA van is ready to be used!!
Nate R. - Sect. Elect: Nate announced we have one candidate…Alissa Olson. Many thanks Alissa!!!

Ann W. - after working for 2 years and passing three tests w/ flying colors, she has the new designation of RICP!! (retirement…..). Buick LeSabre.
Scott N. - Mom being 85 and doing well. Had a Cutlass in college that the cops side-swiped.
Chris Rosenlund - Tony and his mechanics for tuning up the 2008 Yukon, so that Axel could go on another hockey road trip to Provo Utah. Chris did get a bit worried when tony said, “did it make it?” 68 Impala Fast Back that he bought for $300 and sold back to the same guy a year later for $300.
Bonnie W. - just finished one year of walking at least 10,000 steps/ day!! Finished working on a lot of Ash trees in her back yard/forest. 1963 white Chevy.
Mark Magney - For the cortisone shot in his rt. knee, hopefully starts helping soon. Ski season is about to start. 1969 Fiat convertible Spyder.
Alexa R. - does not have Covid, on Wed. all the kids will be in school or day care so she can come to our mtgs., being on the District 5950 Strategic Planning committee. 1968 red Volkswagon.
Mike G. - being able to attend his daughter’s hockey game in Boston w/ two of his sons and Tony Newman for doing such a great job w/ local youth. CAR????? [1976 Chevrolet Chevette - 52 HP - 4 speed. Sweet.]
Chris Carr - Having his annual physical and getting his booster. 76 Impala that was great for having 6+ buddies and refreshments.
Lenny N. - all his kids and grandkids have received their shots. 1967 Olds Cutless convertible; that he plans on refurbishing.
Bob H. - taking his 3-year-old grandson to see the Elf at the Children’s Theatre. 1963 Volkswagon that broke down at mile 26, on a 52-mile area w/ no stations. The tow cost $26, so he gave the tower the car.
Nate R. - family had negative tests. He first drove his parent’s 1994 Ford Escort then bought a 2001 Mustang.
Tony N. - fantastic trip to the US Virgin Islands, 10 people, no drama. 1975 Datsun truck.
Darlyne E. - going to rheumatologist and getting off prednisone. 1968 Volkswagon.
Jacob M. - snow/Winter. 1995 Ford Taurus.
Cathy C. - did not know her red car was a “ticket catcher…many.”
Program
Joe Cavanaugh went to St. John’s and studied Humanities. Started Youth Frontiers 32 years ago. Lives in Edina with his wife, two sons and daughter Tessa. Main theme of Youth Frontiers has always been teaching “timeless character” to the youth. Worked/spoken to over 2 million students, teachers and parents. During the pandemic, where he could not go to schools or companies, had to re-invent his company. Started zoom seminars and Parent Academy to “Heal the World.”
When his daughter Tess was 5, they were in NY and going on the subway. Joe did not take the hint from the ticket person to say she was only 4. Taught her a lesson about building character and teaching her. Every day he reminds her of three-character Pillars: you are strong and not a victim; you have a last name. Cavanaugh and this reflects on you, our family, the neighborhood and your school and lastly ,no matter what you do or happens to you. You are loved, but not worshipped.
The past 18 months. has been very tough on everyone, especially the youth. Life is tough.
GEN Z (15-24 year olds) are basically self-absorbed and have narcissistic tendencies.
They have a sandy Foundation. Reminds of the the Three Little Pigs story and how only one had a good foundation/brick house. The other two went with the quick fix. We all have “big bad wolves” in our lifetime; sickness, pain, aging, financial, etc. Joe tells them to never trust their feelings 100%. Listen to them, evaluate then make a decision.
Mentioned the Titanic where the owner’s ego and arrogance got in his way and the Capt. was a coward.
We all matter. Have dignity.
It is too bad that 42% of the people in the US, think that the people of the opposite political party are evil. When we put people into groups, that is bad.
As we get older, we must be more courageous and assume that some of the things we are “sure about,” are not true. Leadership is very tough today. We all need to work on our character, respect and responsibility.
