Continuing the Spoke - For the near future, in the absence of reporting on weekly meetings, The Spoke will instead feature weekly member submitted notes, comments, thoughts, pictures, ideas and other items focused on Rotary ideals, members activities and community issues.  This includes Happy Bucks (put your dollar in jar to contribute when we meet again soon), announcements, Rotary Minute and other meeting like thoughts.  Please share what you can by sending them to The Spoke editor by email at michaelcglover@comcast.net. You can share anonymously if you like. Let the editor know.

Announcements

Stacey Q. - reviewed our Polio Push, which ends last of April. We met our goal of $5700+ and because we got it in early, we qualified for all the matches, especially the Gates 2:1. The club had fronted the shortage in January, but as of this morning, the treasury is whole again thanks to a $200 contribution. Whoever you are, Thank You!

We can expect a total of 4X or more leveraging, so we should be in excess of $22,000! What a Club!

Nancy D. - Reviewed a plan where we can donate our unused meal credits back to the club, and that money will go to ICA. Perhaps Mac or Nancy will send a club notice on the options you have to contribute. You can also send a separate $ contribution if you’d like. Mac, will you remind us of your mailing address.

Stacey Q. -very sad to hear that our fellow member Trish Angulo had 3 people in her family die from COVID.  It would be just like us to reach out to Trish. pangulo@edtrainu.com.

Rotary Minute, with Cathy C.

Today is Earth Day, and April is also Earth Month. What can our club do to participate, and avoid Death by Plastic. She gave several examples of reusable and compostable items instead of plastic. We will look into these options for our club as the year goes on.

Nancy D. followed on this theme with a District effort underway, led by Steve Solbreck. More examples of less environmental impact and sustainability were mentioned. We will be looking at the ways our club can dial in to this, especially with our annual fundraiser.

Happy Bucks

Alexa R. - mentioned a video recap of 2019, with Chris R only mentioned or seen 3 times. What? That’s usually accomplished in a meeting or two.

Terry S. - he is using Zoom quite a bit, learning about backgrounds.

Chris Carr - golf opened up Saturday, and kudos to Stacey for her leadership, even though we can’t meet as usual.

Florianne N. - glad to be with us from 10,000 miles away. Happy that her daughter’s health scare is not COVID.  It’s very rainy in Rwanda now, some leaky roofs need to be fixed.

Bob H. - DID play golf on Saturday, and happy that his daughter’s home sale and move this week were all settled a month or two ago.

Nancy D. - Her 9 year old grandson gave her a long piano recital, and hummed while he played.

Lenny N. -  for Bill Sorteberg listening without audio this AM, let his daughter sleep in.

Mark Marlin - his golf league starts soon.

Stacey Q. - seeing boats out on the Lake, Bob H continues to embrace technology. (Up to 3rd grade level now).

Char M.  - the pool at The Moline is open, people are out on the BBQ’s.

Mark F. -  happy about the plethora of accountants today, especially our 2 vocationals.

Nate R. (and Mark F) - showing off their UND swag. Go Sioux! (can we still say that?)(Probably best not to. Ed.)

Bob F.  - More UND; his wife is an alum, and her license plates say, GO SIOUX (Oh well, I tried).

Ron L. - he is walking every day, and they have not run out of wine.

Nancy D. - a bottle of wine in every room for an at-home Pub Crawl.

Chris Carr - wine is now available by home delivery.

(OK, reporter sees some club pattern in the last 5 Happy Bucks; UND and wine. Just an observation!)

Frank B. -- speaks to his mother and sister in CA very often; she’s doing OK at age 90.

Ron L. - thank you to all for your support. He is getting better, walking, healing.

Cathy C. - for Tony, a generous pick-up and delivery of her car for some work. Above and beyond.

Glenn J. (maybe Nancy D. - Ed.) - about the Dow Towers need, TP is OK, they could use cleaning/disinfecting supplies.  It’s at 22 5th Avenue S in Hopkins if you just want to drop things off. Contact Katie Dietrich there.  Mike G - added that financial contributions are also welcomed at Dow Towers. See address, ask for Katie.

Program

Lenny N. Vocational

He started off with a photo of his coffee mug from THE Ohio State University. Born with a bang on July 4, 1960 in Calumet City, IL. Moved to Dayton, OH in 1967, 3rd grader.

Graduated from high school in 1978, then on to OSU. Graduated college in 1982, with accounting degree, moved to Houston, worked for Arthur Anderson
CPA degree in 1984, moved to Stamford, CT, worked for Pepisco for 7 years, then to Irvine, CA.

He met Terri in CA, they married in 1992. They moved to Mpls in 1996, with their young son Evan, 2+ years old.

Lenny showed some photos of his family, with help from Ron L. Parents are Nancy and Joel, now in their early 80’s. One sister, Lisa.

Lenny was drawn to Terri for many reasons, one being her role as a single mom, raising her daughter Jennifer. She wanted a more traditional family life, Lenny happy to take part.

Since in MN, Lenny had a Taco Bell franchise, his own restaurant Camille’s, and a stint in SD. He says he is a generalist accountant, likes the variety
He traveled a lot in his 20’s, especially liked Australia.

Lenny finished with strong words for our club, appreciates it very much, very happy that Bob and Mac asked him to join.

Thanks, Lenny. You carry a lot of water for the club.

Nate Rundquist Vocational

Talked about organized and numbers, every detail you could ask for, actually on a spread sheet.

The basics; Born in 1985 in Grand Forks, grew up in Thompson ND, happy days there.Graduated high school 2003, on to UND.

Important to know that UND is THE ND flagship University; Accounting graduate in 2008.

Back up! Alexa from Medora, with a cool apartment, appears in 2004. Lots of border-to-border trips.

CPA degree in 2009 and proposes to Alexa. Good calculation.

They married in 2010, and moved to MN in 2011. They both joined Mtka Rotary in 2012.

Accounting work in Minnesota; Nolan, Bennett and Audrey are born in 2013, 2015, and 2017.

In 2016, Nate was named the National Working Father of the Year in his Association.
Now, THAT’S an award!

Lots of accounting changes last few years, and since working at home since March, the office is a VERY busy place.

It will get busier in September with their 4th child due. Congratulations to you both

Thank you, Nate, for making time Rotary with all your other priorities.

Nancy D. - The (letter below - Ed.) is from the director at Dow Towers in Hopkins.
The Cindy she refers to is Cindy Moy, a former member of our club.  She is working with the Hopkins Women's Club in gathering supplies.  The residents of Dow Towers live on a very limited income and their food stamps do not cover non-food items.  Their needs have increased due to the pandemic.

"Tue 4/21/2020 11:11 AM
Hi Nancy,

So nice to hear from you. We have been blessed to have Cindy deliver quite a lot of supplies to us and are so thankful for that. Because of the generosity we are doing well with most needs right now. this week, we are only short on cleaning supplies and disposable gloves. Specifics would be things like: cleaning sprays for surfaces, disinfecting wipes, sponges and disposable gloves. My residents and I appreciate your continued help and support. You would not believe how many times I have had residents express their gratitude that others are thinking about them and donating items to help during this time.

Take care,
Kayle Dietrich, MSW, LGSW
