Maggie began donating blood in high school & college.
Then she was in a serious car with many broken bones and internal injuries. She was fortunate to be wearing a seat belt & that a nurse that stopped to help. Over 1 ½ years she had 32 corrective procedures and required 60 units of blood. She has since begun working at the Memorial Blood Center.
15% of the Memorial Blood Center blood is donated by students. That results in a shortage of blood during the summer months when school is out.
The Memorial Blood Center is in the top 10 centers in the nation. Donor can only give every 56 days and the blood is only usable for 42 days. The Center works with other Centers to effectively manage their blood supply.
Know you blood type – If you don’t know Phil & Maggie will be at the State Fair (by Kare 11) and can test your blood .
Bob Hersmann also noted that if your blood is also CMS negative it can be used for pre-mature babies – so know this as well.
