Jennifer S. - This Saturday is Summerfest, we have one opening for early shift to check IDs and hand out wristbands. If you are serving beer at Summerfest you must wear a hat or hair net.

Ann W. - After Summerfest we have Golf Tournament, first planning meeting 6/28 5 pm at Tuttles, contact Ann W.

Bob H. - updated on U of M Athletic Village Tour, combined GPA of 3.6 (all athletes)

Ukraine History – Dr. Anna Priscari

Talk originated mid-March, put together this presentation, Minnetonka is 8th Rotary Club to hear this talk

Born in Moldova, Grandparents come from Russia and Ukraine

Political and Ethnic Context

Political History:

NATO Extension going East

1990- US said NATO would not go East, Germany unites. In 1999, Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary joined NATO. Russia was relatively weak. In 2004 seven more countries joined NATO; some bordered Russia. 2008: Big war in Georgia (Russia).

Ethnic History
Ukraine was shifting its borders for centuries

1991: Going to lease Ukrainian Southern land (that is where Russia Navy), so many people in Southern Ukraine were Russian

Ukrainians developed a unique identity ("What part of Ukraine are you from?")
The differences are very apparent in Presidential election (pro East and pro West)

2014: New Government in Ukraine, revoke secondary language law, must speak Ukraine

Crimea referendum, joins with Russia

Two Movements: pro-Ukraine, pro-East

1991: Collapse of Soviet Union (15 countries). Strong Nationalist movement, unique countries want to be separate from Russia
