Announcements

Links & Libations Fundraiser is tomorrow Sept 8 at Glen Lake Golf course. Golfer’s check-in at 1:30.

Remember to turn in ALL your Raffle Tickets (sold & unsold) to Jerald S today or tomorrow at the fundraiser.

Jennifer S. – All assignments filled for fundraiser – thanks to all club members.

Ann W. – We are targeting to raise $40,000 from the event (our best ever).

Alexa R. - Will send an email to members with info including how to reserve a golf cart. It important to reserve your cart early.

Bob H. – Lite up the room with his golf shirt – club members should park at the Medical Examiners Building or Old Boys Home (both next to the golf course). We have 91 golfers.

Alexa R – There will be a District Training program in 2 weeks at Mall of America. The club will sell Rotary Socks. We need volunteers to sell them.

Scott N. – Thanked the club for their assistance in finding services & a good home for a young homeless girl.

Mark M & Tammy – Were at their cabin on the North Shore where they celebrated their 42^nd wedding anniversary.

Bill S & Deb - Celebrated their 30^th wedding anniversary.

Michael G – Thanked everyone for their work on Links & Libations Fundraiser. He drove his daughter to [her first apartment] in Manhattan. Good trip but driving in Manhattan is not fun.

Sam S – Returned from his trip to Greece. Great time and a fascinating place. He also got a chance to drive a Segway.

Program

Char M – Introduced Myrna Marofsky.

Myrna is a business consultant, author, mother & grandmother. She began as a teacher at Robbinsdale school district & worked on the school board. She started a computer training program and a diversity training program. She founded Business Women’s Circle to support women as they grow their businesses. She currently works as a Chapter Chair for the Women’s President Organization. She is the recipient of the Minnesota Power 50 award & the NAWBO Women of Vision award.

Both Myrna & Char cared for spouses that had Alzheimer’s for 6 years.

Myrna’s husband Larry was a real estate attorney that was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s when he was 70.

Her goal was to help Larry live a fulfilling life. She knew Larry needed to stay active through activities to help others.

She got him involved in notarizing wills though an organization that created wills for police & fire fighters. That lasted a year.

Then she found a job for him at Second Harvest packing food. He found this very fulfilling, and Second Harvest was great to work with. He was able to work there for 2 years.

She encourages folks to be Heart Warmer not Heart Breakers. A heart warmer is someone that does something nice for the care giver – even if its just a “I am thinking of you card”. A heart breaker is having someone that talked to you without acknowledges that your Alzheimer’s spouse is also present.

Myrna said everyone’s needs are different in caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s.

She said finding volunteer opportunities were difficult & time consuming.

That is why she wrote the book “To the Last Dance”. The book describes their experiences & feeling. Her hope is that it will help others going through this.

Myrna gave copies of the book to club members.

Dear Michael Glover,

Thanks to the many Clubs of our District who made last year’s polio fundraising successful. I hope our Clubs will make similar plans this year to earmark that $1500 for polio eradication from whatever club fundraising is done this year.

In July, a case of vaccine derived polio type 2 was detected in the US, just weeks after the virus was detected in wastewater samples in the UK. Polio’s return to areas that had been unaffected for decades, is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere. The re-emergence of polio can be explained by many factors, including vaccine hesitancy and a global drop in childhood vaccination rates. But it’s clear today that no matter the location, anyone not vaccinated against polio is at risk. To prevent further cases of paralysis, high vaccination coverage and robust disease surveillance are key. Fully funding the 2022-2026 Global Polio Eradication Initiative is the best way to protect people everywhere into the future, keeping polio from spreading across borders and around the world. Until we eradicate polio worldwide, it will always be just a plane ride away.

As I have been for the last ten years, I remain at your service for speaking and supporting club efforts to engage members around our flagship initiative, global eradication of polio.

Dear Michael,

Join us for a night of dynamic conversation with Honorable Justice Alan Page. This living legend had a remarkable run in the National Football League as an MVP Award Winner with the infamous Purple People Eaters Minnesota Vikings lineup of the 1960’s. He went on to law school at the University of Minnesota and then to an illustrious career in law. In 1993 he was the first African American appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court. In 2018, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor. This recognition is bestowed upon individuals who have made especially meritorious contribution to the United States.

We have planned an evening of lively socializing, entertainment, and education at the idyllic Old Log Theatre in Excelsior. This historic venue is the longest running theater in the United States. This event is part of Rotary’s ongoing commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Our host for the night is Andrew J. Ramirez, a Rotarian from the newly formed MN Pride Rotary Club and District 5950 DEI Action Team Chair.

Fundraiser for Page Educational Foundation

This event is a fundraiser for the Page Educational Foundation. All proceeds will be donated to this exceptional nonprofit organization. The Foundation's goal is to encourage, motivate, and assist Minnesota's students of color in the pursuit of post-secondary education, and, in the process, change the future. The Foundation achieves that goal by doing two things. First, by providing financial assistance to students pursuing post-secondary education. Second, and most important, by requiring its Page Scholars to work with young children, kindergarten through eighth grade, specifically in the area of education.
