From Cathy C. - Global Grants
The Rotary Foundation introduced global grants in the 2013-14 Rotary year to fund large-scale, sustainable activities that are aligned with one or more of Rotary’s areas of focus. In 2019-20, 1,350 global grants were awarded, totaling over $100 million.
Some tips we should be aware of for a successful global grant application are shared in the Rotary magazine. Here is some food for thought on this important Rotary initiative.
Rotarians design a project with the people they want to help. Successful projects capitalize on the strengths a community or project already has.
A common mistake on grant applications is not focusing on the right goal. Know the policy statements. Applicants sometimes focus on much smaller goals. Encourage applicants to look at the bigger picture.
Be aware of ineligible expenses. Projects for schools, for example, might list school equipment. However, the focus should be on professional development for its teachers. Things like that.
Look for a partner in the project. RI has a showcase site to search for a club/district with many Global Grant potential projects that would welcome a likeminded partner.
Where can Rotarians go for help during the application process – so much help is available? RI and even at the District level, to be certain the club application meets all the necessary criteria.
Announcements
Chris Carr - There was a Board meeting last Friday, the club is in communication with Eisenhower on our room and costs. Changes will be coming our way.
Chris Carr - The club is looking for a volunteer to manage the Lake Street Project. If you are interested, please see Nancy Davis.
Lenny W. - said we have raised $1937 towards our goal of $3000 for polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is offering a 2 for 1 match.
Glenn J. - said the Fee Bike for Kids has been temporarily canceled, he will let us know when it has been rescheduled.
Nancy D. - said the Foundation is working with Beds for Kids, Char and Cathy are managing.
Chris Carr - will be sleeping outside on National Sleep Out night on Dec 5.
Happy Bucks
Bill S. - is happy that he was able to hand out turkeys last week-end at ICA, and that he was able to have a beer with Lenny.
Frank B. - had a nice trip to Iowa, he enjoyed the scenery and seeing his family.
Nancy D. - daughter’s business is doing well and hired her first employee.
Mike G. - is happy he will be with his kids over Thanksgiving, and his son in Chicago is moving back to MPLS.
Lenny N. - is happy for the non-traditional Thanksgiving. He and his family will be Zooming as they have their annual sing-a-long.
Jennifer S. - is happy her family of 4 will be together for Thanksgiving. She is also happy that 4 members of our club have graciously agreed to be sponsors for the Hopkins Foundation Fundraiser.
Terry S. - is happy it hailed at his house last Fall. His insurance company just finished replacing the roof on his house.
Patti S. - is happy that Bill helped with the Turkey hand out last weekend at ICA, and that she was able to be with her family from Milwaukee a few weeks ago.
Ron U. is proud of his grandson who just purchased his first car. His grandson was discussing the cost of car ownership with Grandpa. He also happy that we will be having a speaker from the MN Science Museum next week.
Bob H. - was happy that he has been working on the Hersman family history. He is looking for a recommendation on publishers.
Christine L. - was happy that she saw Ann W at the Marsh last week.
Mark Forsberg - is grateful for being part of the MTKA Rotary Club.
Nancy D. - is happy that her mom will be going to Open Circle and excited to learn of the connection between Open Circle and our club.
Alexa R. - will be doing the cooking on Thanksgiving Day. Because everyone at their home has Covid, the menu will be changing.
Chris Carr - just hired Stacy’s daughter to work at his office, and he is spending Thanksgiving at the lake with his family.
Program
Our Speakers this week were 2 vocationals, Holly M. and Tony N.
Holly M. grew up in Minneapolis, MN, she graduated from Southwest High School. She attended Carlton College in Northfield. She and her husband have 3 adopted pets. She received her Graduate degrees in Public Health and Social Work from the U of M. Holly works for the Hopkins School District in Community Ed. She has taken on many roles at the school. She is excited to be charge of “One Voice” at the school. Her current title is Coordinator of Community Partnerships. Holly is very proud of her family. Her father played basketball for the U of M. We are excited to have Holly as part of our club.
Tony N. was born in St. Louis Park, MN, moved to Washington State as a child, and then back to MN. He graduated from New London Spicer High School. While living in Washington State, Tony spent a lot of time hiking and skiing in the mountains. Tony eventually moved to Chaska, MN, where he met his wife, she was his neighbor. They have been married for 20 years; they have 2 children, ages 14 and 16. His 16-year-old daughter just got her driver’s license. Tony went to school at Dunwoody to study automotive repair. Tony started his automotive repair career at Feste Automotive. He left that job for a short stint and eventually came back. He purchased the business in Jan, 2018. He is grateful for the guidance he has received from Dale F.
