Rotary Minute
The RI Foundation has added a new Focus; The Environment. Rotarians are charged with protection of natural resources and sustainability. We will access or give grants for local solutions, and decreasing the effect of climate change.
One example today; single use plastic bags.
1. 100 billion bags are used in one year world-wide
2. The US uses 365 bags per person per year, compared to Denmark with only 4 per person
3. Using 14 plastic bags is like driving one mile.
4. In 2015, the world used 730,000 tons of plastic bags; 87% are not recycled.
5. It takes 1000 years for a plastic bag to degrade, and it just goes somewhere else.
Practice waste prevention, use your reusable bags Cathy has supplied.

Ann W. - Links and Libations meeting on Tuesday, Aug 16 at 5:00 at the Bear Cave brewery in Hopkins. Bring everything you have, remember each member is charged with bringing in $700 for the fundraiser (Golfers, sponsors, raffle ticket sales), and a bottle for the liquor bucket.
Get out there and sell! It is only 4 weeks from this Thursday on September 8. GO GO GO!

Program
Speaker today is Andrea Meyers with Hopewell Music. Andrea is a flutist and teacher (among other instruments) and was (is?) the coordinator of the U of M Fine Arts Scholarship Program.
She is happy that she herself received Rotary assistance for her music training.
In 2012, she turned her efforts to Hopewell Music to bring music lessons and instruments to children of the North side of Mpls. Since inception, it has taught over 750 students, and placed them in band, orchestra, and ensembles.
In most cases, music lessons and instruments is not available to these kids, and the schools have trouble funding them. These students pay on a sliding scale, and ability to pay is never an issue. To date, Hopewell has given out over $250,000 in scholarships.
The musicians perform in several community locations, especially the Victory Rehabilitation Center. Their interaction with the clients is a huge value to both the children and patients.
Through music, children lessen mental health and anxiety, and gain comfort and connection in the community. Hopewell Music is the only music school in the Northside. The average time in the program for each student is 4-5 years, with 91% retention.
Andrea said we can help by attending events like the Northside Summer Celebration, provide school supplies, clothing, spread the word, get the newsletter. One thing Hopewell does NOT need is more instruments. Funding chiefly comes from grants and private donations.
Thank you, Andrea, for the dedication you have for Hopewell and the amazing difference you have made in the lives of all your young musicians.
