Foundation Award Checks or Thank Yous

Ron U. introduced Deb Fair from Uplift North, receiving a $2000 grant today. Deb says Uplift has 220 volunteers, including Cathy Feste, who provide 9 programs in education, basic needs, and overall help. Our grant was directed towards making emergency packs for victims of sexual assault. She encouraged us to come for tours of their facilities.

Savanna Wilson, on Rotary Service in her home country of Zimbabwe, and Madagascar. She has seen Rotary’s presence and service most of her life, especially with eradication of polio. She’s feels privileged to be present at the receiving end of all the work and money Rotary supplies. Rotary shows what the ‘power of 1’ can do to make a difference in the world.

The Star Fish Community Award

The Star Fish Community Award; Cathy reminded us of the start of the award, and for those who are exemplary volunteers in our community. Bob nominated Caralee Hanks, who he’s met though Meals on Wheels. She was involved at the very start, in 1965.

Churches, volunteers, and Methodist Hospital started delivering meals and support to people in a variety of need. She has covered every duty for over 50 years, with uncountable 1000’s of meals and visits.

Caralee spoke of her experience right from the start, and as recent as today with memories of people she served and formed friendships. Thank you, Caralee, for your outstanding service, for so many years.

Happy Bucks

Frank B. - for an upcoming visit to Dubuque for an honor to his father who established an Aviation Learning Center.

Ryan R. -  for Scott Nagel filling in next week as President.

Jay Allen - our co-newest member and his 1st happy buck. He is proud to be a 3rd generation Rotarian, and that his music recording was used at the most recent Academy Awards.

Jennifer S. - back home from a trip to Barcelona with her family. Wonderful hiking and scenery.

Ron U. - recommending a book by Sigurd Olson for the beauty and emotion of time and canoeing in the BWCA and Quetico.

Alexa R. and her family - The 3 kids present are all in scouting, and are selling popcorn as a fundraiser. They each talked about their involvement in Scouting.

Program

David Bearman, on his effort to start Cleaning Up for Cancer.  He started by telling us his personal story of cancer striking his wife and mother-in-law at about the same time in 1999. He lived the life of how cancer affects the whole family. He saw house how house cleaning just couldn’t be done, and also that a clean house is a healthy house.

David started forming alliances for volunteer and financial help. He started with 50-70 cleanings per year in 2009, and now has grown to many more professional and volunteer and free cleanings. He has worked on a new app which will put these families much more easily in touch with his cleanings program.

He reminds us that October is breast cancer awareness month. He showed a moving testimonial by coach P.J. Fleck about how cancer touches us all physically and emotionally. Contact David if you know of someone who might benefit from his programs.

There was a wealth of talk today from several speakers on the good that is going on in our, and the world’s, communities. It is so good to hear of this work at our weekly Rotary meetings. Thank you all who stand up with your service.

From Mark Marlin and the Grief Club:

From Frank B. -

Frank, I wanted to follow up and say THANK YOU for the opportunity to present this morning. Shannon and I had a great time and we really appreciated the engaging questions afterwards. We can tell you have a thoughtful and passionate group which is what is needed to drive community impact! You inspired us to check out our own communities' local Rotary chapters.

I wanted to follow up with a few resources from our presentation today since members were requesting more information and we didn't have our business cards on hand. If you are open to it, do you mind sharing the following resources with your members so that they can reach out with their follow ups? A few members that we spoke to afterwards are so well connected in relevant statewide organizations, we would love to connect and get further information!
