Program -
Helping Paws Chelsea, Mary, Kimber(black lab)
35 year old program to breed, train, foster dogs to help with comfort and companionship.
Volunteers provide 8 weeks of fostering with home training, attend training classes for 2.5 years and return dog for placement after graduation.
Average cost per dog for the completed program, $30,000.The organization relies on donations.
Golden retrievers and labs are preferred for training. They are good family dogs. better at transferring affection, love to work, and much easier than other breeds to train.
The dogs are selectively breed with usually 10 in a litter. 70% make it as a career.
The dogs learn how to retrieve items, get help, do simple tasks like turning on a light switch.
Mary demonstrated Kimber's response to commands, picking up keys, helping tug on a shirt sleeve to help with undressing, resting while not working.
Each command is rewarded with a treat as payment for the work.
