Rotary Minute
Cathy C. claimed she had nothing to say, but like Mac, she figured it out on the way to the podium. She talked about Rotary’s involvement with the United Nations, even before it was chartered. It was an interesting history about the synergism between the UN and RI to maintain peace around the world. After 75 or so years, it is still a central goal of Rotary.
Announcements
The meeting had a different start, when PE Mike donned a ‘beautiful’ plaid sport coat that Bob has had for 47 years. (As if the volume of the room wasn’t already loud enough!) We may borrow the phrase “Plaid to be here” from Jennifer’s Education Foundation Gala, and make it our club tag line. In the words of Billy Crystal, “Mike, you look Marvelous!”
Jennifer S. - That Gala is upcoming, and she thanked the club members for their support.
Jerald S. - The Polar Plunge is on March 12, and he’s also grateful for club support.
Chris Carr - The Wayzata Chili Open (Golf on the Snow) is on Saturday, Feb 12. We can support it, and even volunteer to help at it.
Chris Carr - Also, at the end of the meeting, Chris introduced Chelsea Ritland from Hopkins Adult Options in Education. They help adults get their GED degrees and move on to secondary education. She expressed her thanks for a $2000 grant from our foundation. They have assisted between 800-1000 adult learners.
Dale F. - The Empty Bowls is coming up in the first week of March. It will again be virtual, and Dale will keep us apprised of the details. We always make a generous club contribution, and let’s keep that going. Also, ICA will be making us breakfast at our Feb 23 meeting, at least in part to thank us for help with procuring their new delivery van.

It appears the only reason Cathy C. hadn’t won the ticket recently was that she was on vacation. It’s no surprise she jumped right back today, but no joker.

Ron U. - told us about the newest Covid strain; its being called the C-Nile Covid.
It hits those born between 1940 and 1970, and eliminates your computer skills.
You send messages twice, to the wrong person, forgetting attachments, among many more. If you don’t admit to these, you’ve gotten the mutation, the D-Nile virus.
Terry S. - working hard on restoring Beth’s email and phone accounts.
Frank B. - VERY happy and grateful that a 1-year old family member recovered from a serious case of Covid. It was touch and go, but quick medical help was successful.
Char M. - $10 for getting another Handicap parking sticker, following her serious heart condition (cardiomyopathy) in 1998.
Bill S. - regarding our HBTO question of best HS tournament memories, he has not missed a hockey tourney since 1962.
Mark Magney - $10 for his ski rack on his truck, and heading west for a ski trip with some old (long-time) Hopkins buddies.
Alissa O. - heading to AZ for some warm weather sky diving and best tourney memory was her school, Jefferson HS, winning it in while she was there (BB or Hockey?)
Alexa R. - sorry, missed the first part, but HBTO for a class B Basketball championship.
Cathy C. - happy to be back from the Bahamas. She recalls a funny moment when one of the Lescarbo (Lescarbeau? Ed.) boys was introduced to the crowd, and promptly fell on the ice TWICE. It seems he forgot to have removed his skate guards. Unforgettable!
Lenny N. - off to see his parents in Dayton, OH
Mike G. - sorry, Mike missed it (add it in yourself). (Don't remember. Ed.)
Glenn J. - he’s a real fan of the App game ‘Wordle’, and memories of De LaSalle HS tournaments.
Bob H. - heading out today for a week with his son and daughter-in-law, and of course, 8 month old grandson Isaac in North Carolina. And hopes that the sport coat will be the hit of the Gala.
Program
Speakers. David LaVaque and Loren Nelson
David is a long-time sports reporter for the Star Tribune, and Loren is a journalist and writer. They talked about what makes Minnesota still the #1 hockey state, mostly because it is community based. Most states have more private, traveling teams. The number of kids who play hockey in Minnesota is huge. They feel hockey, and sports really help kids become responsible, and develop long-time relationships.
They are also very glad to see the big growth in girls sports since Title 9 came on in the 1990’s.
They collaborated on a 2019 book, Tourney Time, celebrating 75 years of the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. They wanted to capture the excitement and personal stories of the event, more so than statistics. Each chapter covers the winning team that year, and it has over 200 photos, and what made that team successful that year. The final section has many Top 10 charts of games, players, and coaches.
The club had many questions about the tourney.
