At our February 11 meeting, we will have Rotary Has Heart, a hands-on service initiative focused on making an immediate and meaningful impact both locally and internationally. During the meeting, members will have the opportunity to assist local nonprofit organizations by completing 30-minute service projects designed to support their ongoing missions in a practical and efficient way.

We will also have a surprise from Four Way Harmonies- we cannot wait to see what they have in store for us!

In addition to our local efforts, on February 12 we will also work together to prepare layette bags for new and expecting mothers in Honduras. These bags are assembled with essential items that help meet basic needs for mothers and infants, materials that are not always readily available in the communities we serve. This project reflects Rotary’s commitment to improving maternal and child health while extending compassion beyond our borders.

Rotary Has Heart is a reminder that even a small amount of time, when combined with collective effort, can create lasting change. We look forward to coming together in service and fellowship as we support organizations and families who rely on the care and dedication of Rotary.

The Rotary Club of Beaumont is pleased to announce its scholarship to be awarded to two high school students graduating in 2026 as well as one scholarship to Lamar Institute of Technology for a non traditional student.

The application must be completed by all students wishing to be considered for a Rotary Club of Beaumont Scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will review all applications and recommend to the Board those two students whose academic success, leadership potential, and community service activities demonstrate a commitment to “Service Above Self.”

We will be assembling layette bags as a service project for expecting and new mothers in Honduras. A sign-up link will be provided for one-hour volunteer shifts that will be happening February 12, 2026.

Volunteers in the early shifts will help open boxes, sort items, and organize supplies into groups. Volunteers in the later shifts will assemble the items into layette bags and prepare them for shipment.

We had a great time at Rotary After Hours, February 5 at 5:30 PM at Elsa's. It was a great opportunity to network, catch up with fellow members, and enjoy a relaxed evening of conversation and camaraderie. We look forward to seeing you next time!

The Wednesday, February 4th meeting of the Rotary Club of Beaumont was held at the MCM Elegante Hotel’s Ballroom. The noon meeting was called to order by Club President Uliana Trylowsky. Joining Ulianna at the head table were:

Diane Thompson providing the Invocation, Connie Tilton leading in the pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags, and Phil Dunlap for introduction of guests and visiting Rotarians.

Announcements:

*Uliana announced the Flag Project coming up on President’s Day, Feb. 16 would be needing volunteers and to contact Pat Anderson to schedule.

*Terri Potter reminded the members about plans for International Women’s Day on March 11th.

*Kym Johns promoted the Rotary After Hours event at Elsa’s Greek Grill on Thursday, Feb. 5th at 5:30pm.

*Cheryl Bilyeu provided information about next week’s meetings of the annual “Rotary Has Heart” community service events – Wednesday 2/11 will be assisting nonprofits such as Gift of Life, Child Abuse & Forensics Inc., Boys Haven, and TAN. On Thursday, 2/12, members are encouraged to schedule to assemble “Layettes” for Honduras.

Dena Hughes introduced today’s speaker: Dr. Maxie Sprott II, an OB-Gyn based in Beaumont with more than four decades of dedicated clinical experience in women’s health. Dr. Sprott is affiliated with CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth and continues to support women’s health through all stages of life. On a personal note, Dr. Sprott spends time with foster animals and enjoys jazz music. He was presenting a history of the local Sprott Hospital.

To understand the founding of the Sprott Hospital, one has to learn about the lifestyle, focus, vision and passions of the Sprott family. The story begins with Ed Sprott Sr., a postal worker and father of 9 children. As led by Ed Sr. the family had an emphasis on discipline and education, with all 9 children having college degrees despite the Depression Era – producing educators, lawyers, and physicians. Four of the sons also served with the U.S. Army following the assault on Pearl Harbor.

Ed Jr. who was a physician before serving in the army, started Sprott Hospital during the 1940’s and segregation to improve the care for black clients. Curtis joined Ed Jr. as a Family Practitioner and offered lab, xray and “house calls”. Maxie joined the group in 1955 and the hospital was then a “full service institution”. The hospital treated all who needed care (including poor white families from Bmt and Vidor), requiring no payment for treatment! Patients paid what they could and offered what they had such as produce. Despite their best efforts, members of the family suffered persecution such as Ed Jr’s home being bombed (fortunately no injuries) for his participation to fight for social change.

In 1964, with integration, discrimination began to decrease and so did the need for a “black hospital”. The Sprott Hospital ceased about 1970, though for the Sprott brothers there was no meaning to the word, retirement as they continue to stay active til the Lord calls them home. Today the building is used as a mental health resource center, and the Sprott family legacy lives on through their dedication to education, healthcare, and community service.

After this inspiring and captivating presentation, Uliana thanked our speaker by acknowledging a donation to be made in his honor to Rotary International. Then after reciting the “4-way test”, President Uliana adjourned the meeting.
