Ted Talk!
With this being the year of the Ted Moor presidency, we will have a new feature at meetings: Ted Talks. Ted Talks will likely take place about once a month and will contain a minute or two of valuable information.
The first Ted Talk was on July 20 by President's Assistant Karyn Hawkins. It was about signing in and setting up a My Rotary account on Rotary International website so every member might have access to Rotary Central. District Governor Gig Langston challenged us to increase the number of club members who have accounts so we hope you will set yours up right now.
First to explain: a "My Rotary" account is totally separate from and different than your ClubRunner account and website log-in. You should retain that and sign in to our BeaumontRotaryClub.org website for the club directory, your attendance, finding documents, etc.
My Rotary and Rotary Club Central are associated parts of the Rotary.org (Rotary International) website. RI would like every Rotarian in the world to be connect through Rotary.org, and you are asked to get an account if you have not yet done so.
Here is a few steps to follow:
1. Go to: rotary.org/myrotary (on your mobile device, screen will look like the image below but it will be similar on your desktop computer as well.)
2. Click on Sign in/Register.
It will take you to the screenshot you see below.
Enter your email address.
Enter your password. You CAN use the same password as you use in ClubRunner or enter a different one of your choice.
The bottom button (not clear in the image above) says, CREATE ACCOUNT. Click on that.
Guess what?!?! You did it! You now have an account in My Rotary and will have access to Rotary Club Central and all its features.
In future "Ted Talks" we will show you features of My Rotary and Rotary Club Central and you will come to love the value it has for your Rotary experience.

"Ten Years of
LIT Success Celebrated"

Our speaker today was Paul Szuch, President Emeritus of Lamar Institute of Technology. Dr. Szuch was introduced by Patrick Calhoun, Vice President of Workforce Development at LIT.
The presentation today was a combination of the amazing growth of LIT over the past ten years as well as a "tongue-in-cheek, lump-in-throat" farewell to Paul who has been a member of our Rotary Club for the past ten years.
Enrollment in LIT over the past ten years has increased mostly with Hispanics up 57%, followed by African-American with a 14% increase. Over the past ten years, grants and scholarships have totaled $4.56 million dollars.
A pie-chart would show that the costs for tuition are generally:

41% Tuition & Fees
28% Other sources
One year after graduation, job placement for LIT graduates is at a staggering 92.8%!
When it comes to state funding for secondary education, the amount has increased ONLY $19.00, yet, with much vision and creativity, enrollment and programs available for students continue to increase. Tuition and Fees at LIT has increased considerably, as it has with ALL institutions of higher education.
Dr. Szuch highlighted the creation and expansion of the Tommy Williams Technical Building which houses 5 (five) critical trades that are in high demand, here in South East Texas:

Industrial Mechanics Lab
HVAC Lab
Diesel Lab
New Technology Arts Lab
Paul walked us through "a day in the life of a Post-Secondary President" with a creative video which included:
Finance - demonstrated through the art of “putting a golf ball”
Scheduling - which included reductions in benefits for staff, during a paper airplane demonstration
Motivation - as Paul "motivated" his Team, by increasing the cost of lunches, and instituting preferred parking fees that would rival Manhattan.
Paul and Connie have been part of our community for ten years, serving on numerous project committees and Boards in the non-profit sector. Their leadership, participation, and support were felt by anyone who has had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with them. They will be missed, and we wish them well.
