Lamar University Professor, Dr. James Westgate, has a resume that is documentation of achievement that surpasses more than most individuals can dream of accomplishing. Jim holds more degrees, has completed more projects and written more research articles and books than one can imagine.
Many people have worked with Jim on one of the many projects and boards related to science in our area: the JASON Alliance for Southeast Texas, Dinosaur Day and the Texas Energy Museum Board, the Clean Air and Water, Inc. Board, and the Board of the Big Thicket Association. Moreover, he has touched the lives of and had significant impact on the education of thousands of children through teacher education in the science.
Dr. Westgate will address the growing issue of global warming - its causes and effects on the earth. How can you reduce your carbon footprint and help to save the earth from catastrophic climate impacts and the effects on the next generations? WHAT'S AHEAD!
On February 8, we will welcome the State Director of Emergency Management, Chief W. Nim Kidd. Chief Kidd is "responsible for the efforts that prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all-hazards that could impact over 27 million Texans."
February 15 has become our traditional day of giving and sharing, our annual "Rotary Has Heart" day of service. We will complete 150 layettes for women and infants in Nicaragua as the Club's District Grant project, and we have a number of local service organizations and agencies that need our hands-on assistance also.

The T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics is presented annually to a Beaumont Rotarian who consistently exhibits the highest ethical standards represented by the Rotary Four-Way Test in his or her chosen vocation.
The original criteria for the award explains:
Nominees must be a member in good standing of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.
Nominees will have exhibited high ethical standards in their chosen vocation arising from a specific incident or by their consistent actions over a period of time.
Since its inception in 1995-96, the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics has recognized some of our outstanding members. In 2016, this prestigious honor was presented to Past President Becky Mason.
Our Club will award the coveted honor at the February 22nd meeting, according to this year's chairman, Joe Domino.
The deadline for nomination is Wednesday, February 8th.
Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round. How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day as our Club Service Day, providing hands-on service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!
We have plans for several different hands-on service projects to work on and possibly complete on Service Day. First priority is to assemble 150 Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua. Everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and lend a hand to this project, funded in part with a grant from District 5910.
If you sit on a board or work with an agency in Beaumont that has a need for help with a hands-on project to be done that day, please contact Sheree Pierce or the Rotary office.
Bring co-workers and friends who also believe in having fun while helping others. Don't miss it!

Flag Project for Presidents Day
Monday, February 20 is Presidents Day and a day for Rotarians to help our neighbors "Show Your Colors!"
Please plan to volunteer to help again with this project! Join with other Rotarians and friends to make sure the flags are flying for our nearly 500 subscribers.

The Beaumont Rotary Foundation continues to fund college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. The scholarship applications are available through the high school counselor or from the Club's website by linking here. The deadline to submit an application is March 1.
