"Some Enchanted Meeting: Songs and Scenes from South Pacific"
Presented by
Beaumont Community Players
Directed by
Paula Bothe
After the intensity of events of the past few weeks, it is time to escape to another place and another time. It is time to come together and enjoy a bit of entertainment in the form of some classic and familiar tunes and the excellent talent in the community. Under the artistic talent of the well-respected director, Paula Bothe, the show's performers will bring their talent to entertain Rotarians and friends with tunes of the all-time favorite show "South Pacific."
This classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical romance has wonderful characters, comedy and songs like "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Hai" and "Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair." It's a salute to the Greatest Generation and a loving remembrance of absent friends.
Come enjoy a toe-tapping good time!

Are your Dues Paid?
Dues were due on July 1, and there are a significant number of members still owing dues fur July - December 2017. The storm and recovery has delayed notifying you individually but we will be sending second notices soon. If you have not yet paid the July - December 2017 invoice for dues, PLEASE do so now as it ispast due.
If you receive the 2nd notice, it means we are not showing your invoice paid on either the Rotary office's book or the CPA's records. Please check your bank records, your credit card receipts or with your accounts payable office to see if a payment has been sent. Phone the office (842-1913) if you think there has been an error.
Remember, you don't even have to leave your desk to make a payment. Simply access your personal account through the link on the bottom of the invoice you receive, or use the homepage link, in the right hand column, that looks like this:
If you need assistance or a printed copy of your invoice mailed to you, please phone the Rotary Office at 842-1913.

Doing Our Part
This is your final opportunity to turn in plastic water bottles for recycling at the Rotary meeting. If you do not participate in the city recycling program, you can bring empty plastic water bottles and get them into recycling instead of the landfill. You can also pick up a box like the one shown in the pictures to put at your workplace for employees to participate in the recycling of the many empty bottles since the storm created the water issues in Beaumont.

We Need YOU!
It might have been the only time in "Show Your Colors!" history that a delivery was cancelled, but due to the heavy need for volunteers to address the storm damage, we sacrificed a flag delivery on September 11. Let's make history again with a delivery never made before! On Monday, October 9, we will honor our great country with a show of colors on Columbus Day!
Therefore, we need your volunteer commitment with the "Show Your Colors" Flag Project on Monday, October 9. We need both volunteers and trucks! Please let Pat Anderson or Gary Moncla hear from you right away if you can help.
Steve spoke to Rotarians about the faith-Based work that the Camino Foundation is involved in as he spoke of Transformational Development. "Transformational Development shifts the focus from the material to the relational and finally spiritual life of the individual – true transformation. Humanity’s developmental problems result from broken or mis-aligned relationships which prevent the person from becoming all that they were created to be. Restoring these relationships starts with fostering the productive, creative capacity of each individual through entrepreneurship, microfinance and Redemptive Engagement Business (REBs). If we want to do 'good' well, we need to check our focus. Transformational Development reflects our concern for positive change in the whole of human life - socially and spiritually.”
Steve presented the following: 1) Relief versus Development
Relief - short-term; a usual response to crisis; addresses material, relational and spiritual needs
Development - long-term, response to systemic problems (usually evident for a long period of time); holistic approach or response (Holistic is defined as the incorporation of the idea that the whole is more than merely the sum of its parts).
2) “You think really differently from the rest of the world.”
3) Asset-Based Community Development Ask the right questions; NOT what do I think they may need? Or I will give them what I think they need, but not what they think they need. How can I empower them to respond?
Steve used Toms, the shoe company, as an example of one desiring to “do something good with the best intentions that results in less than positive consequences." Toms' business model is known as the "one-for-one concept" model, which is referring to the company's promise to deliver a pair of free shoes to a child in need for every sale of their retail product. The countries involved have included Argentina, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Rwanda, South Africa and the United States. The company uses word-of-mouth advocacy for much of its sales, centering its business focus on corporate social responsibility. Part of this model originally involved a non-profit arm of the company called "Friends of Toms," that recruited volunteers to help in the shoe distributions in foreign countries. Tom's trademarked the phrase "One-for-One" to describe its own business model. Toms has received criticism from the international development community who stated that Toms' model is designed to make consumers feel good, rather than addressing the underlying causes of poverty and health issues.
Steve went on to outline the Holistic Capital Model:
Human Capital - skills, trainings
Natural Capital - natural resources
Social Capital - market, rules (rule of law, property rights), trust
Financial Capital - money
Spiritual Capital - values
At the conclusion of his presentation, as a former Beaumont resident, Steve wished the community well in recovery from the recent storm, saying it was strange to be watching Hurricane Harvey from his home in Dallas, feeling like he should be here with us.
