Beakal Alemayehu, Managing Partner with Ethio Texan, LLC, is welcomed to the club by his wife, Ashley Smith Alemayehu. BK's servant heart is evident by his history of volunteer efforts. Before moving to Beaumont, he served with the Houston area American Red Cross with disaster and humanitarian relief efforts. He came to the Beaumont / Orange area in 2016 to assist with the flood issues that occurred in March. We are glad you joined us, BK!

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Rotary International President-elect Sam F. Owori died unexpectedly on 13 July due to complications from surgery. Sam was a member of the Rotary Club Kampala, Uganda, for 38 years.
“Rotary has become a way of life for me – with the intrinsic value and core belief in mutual responsibility and concern for one another as a cornerstone,” Sam said when he was nominated last year. “I feel immense satisfaction knowing that through Rotary, I’ve helped someone live better.”
Sam's term as Rotary’s 108th president would have begun on 1 July 2018.
“Please remember Sam as the outstanding, hardworking Rotarian he was,” said Rotary International President Ian Riseley. “In this difficult time, I ask you to keep his wife, Norah, the Owori family, and Sam’s millions of friends around the world in your thoughts.”
Under Sam's leadership, the number of clubs in Uganda swelled from nine to 89 over the course of 29 years.
Sam saw in Rotary members "an incredible passion to make a difference," and wanted to "harness that enthusiasm and pride so that every project becomes the engine of peace and prosperity."
“Sam was a special person in so many ways, and his unexpected death is a huge loss to Rotary, his community, and the world,” Riseley said. “We are establishing details on plans to celebrate his life as they become available.”

"Call to Action: Rotary Making a Difference!"

Our speaker for Rotary today was Lee Wheeler, III, founder & Owner of Wheeler Commercial Real Estate. Lee was introduced by Barry Bryant of Bill Clark Pest Control.
As the writer, I was expecting to hear about the commercial real estate market in South East Texas as well as about Lee's years of experience with commercial real estate. As a proud American and a veteran, I certainly appreciated and respect Lee's years of military service as a U.S. Marine and his 4 combat-tours. I expected that he would talk mostly of himself and his business. He did neither!
Instead, Lee gave us an inspirational presentation of a "Call To Action: Making A Difference!" Lee shared information related to just how great Rotary is, and how very special our club is by reminding (perhaps teaching) Rotarians of some of the Club's significant and notable historical facts.
Turns out that Lee knows a lot more about the history of Rotary and our club than I ever knew or remembered. His presentation focused on the legacy that is Rotary, just like other great organizations, like our military, and what our forebearers left us, and what we contribute to when we get "called into action," a legacy of service above self!
Lee wanted to remind us all that our organization is great because of what was accomplished by those who came before us. When speaking of leaving a legacy, Lee mentioned the pride of our military and those who came before us, as well as our pride in our Rotary Club which, in spirit, carries the dedication of Rotarians of the past. Andrew Carnegie is best remembered for his legacy of philanthropy and what he left behind (libraries, etc.), rather than the wealth that he created.
Rotary has a long and proud history of "service above self", and how we impact the people in our community and in the world, that the spirit of all of our members throughout the years, goes with us in whatever we do. Lee shared that he gets so much joy when helping others, just like the folks in the Rotary Club of Beaumont. He strongly encouraged all club members to sign-up to make a difference by serving through the programs of our service lanes and committees as he concluded his "Call To Action: Making A Difference." His charge was well-stated, "Continue to build the Legacy of Rotary!"
