"Women in Rotary"
Jennifer Jones 2016-17 Vice President of Rotary International
The Rotary Club of Beaumont is proud to announce the celebration of International Women's Day 2019 at the club meeting on Wednesday, March 6, when we will welcome Jennifer Jones as the featured speaker. The location for this meeting will be The Laurels at 1315 Calder Avenue.
Jennifer Jones served as the Vice President of Rotary International in 2016-2017 and is currently the co-chair of the End Polio Now-Make History Today campaign to raise $150 million dollars. Ms. Jones is the promotions chair for the 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany. Additionally, she has served the organization as a training leader, moderator, committee vice-chair, coordinator, and President’s Representative. She has also played a lead role in Rotary’s rebranding effort as the Chair of the Strengthening Rotary’s Advisory Group. Widely known for her great storytelling and warm presentations, Ms. Jones has been recruited as the keynote speaker at numerous training workshops and conferences around the world.
Please plan to arrive between 11:30 and 11:45 so you can go through the buffet line before the meeting, which begins at noon. The Laurels has parking to the west side of the venue and in the rear. You may also park along Broadway at the rear of the facility.

WEAR PINK! on International Women's Day!
"On Wednesdays, we wear pink!" they said in a popular movie and it is the perfect color to wear on March 6, the day the club will celebrate International Women's Day when we acknowledge the achievements of women in Rotary International. You might have seen the special segment on the color on CBS show "Sunday Morning" on February 17th, which noted that the color pink was once the preferred color for the fashionable and aristocratic - women and men! So, though you might not wear it often, on March 6th, pink will be fashionable for everyone!

The Rotary Club of Beaumont in cooperation with the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for a scholarship designed for “Non-Traditional” students pursuing an undergraduate degree at Lamar University. A designated committee of Rotary members will review the applications and select the top students to be interviewed for the one available scholarship. We would appreciate your help in identifying qualified candidates for the scholarship which is generously supported by members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.

"The Principles of Ethical Leadership"

Jeff Dyson, our speaker for this week, is a former member of Rotary and a previous winner of the distinguished T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics. He said that his goal in life was to work for himself. Mission accomplished through M&D Supply.
Growing up, Jeff loved sports and played football throughout his school years. He's had four knee surgeries to prove it. Now he just tosses the football around with his grandsons. But he still loves sports, which means watching and following various teams and athletes. One of the athletes he admires is Lance Berkman, former first baseman for the Houston Astros.
When Jeff learned that his wife, Pat, had an assignment as a free-lance writer to interview Lance Berkman and write an article about him, he was really excited about the opportunity to meet this great player. He went with Pat dressed up in his Astros colors and his truck freshly washed to meet Lance and get his autograph and maybe even a photograph taken with Lance. When they got to the Astros facility, they were met by a fellow who welcomed them and led Pat into the meeting room with Lance, but Jeff had to wait in the lobby. He was devastated. To occupy his time during the interview, he pulled a book out from his backpack titled "The Speed of Trust" by Steven Covey. In the book, Covey lists four cores to developing great trust in yourself: integrity, intent, capabilities and results.
Before he knew it, Pat came out of the room with Lance and began talking about what a nice, polite, down-to-earth guy he was. She described his experiences growing up, how his dad, coaches and fellow players had taught him about being a good sport win or lose (integrity), working hard (intent) to develop his talent (capabilities) so that he could achieve success, not just in baseball, but in life as well (results). He couldn't believe how it all tied into what he had just been reading in Covey's book.
All of these qualities are characteristics of our winner of the T. Kelsey Lamb award this year – PHIL DUNLAP. Congratulations Phil!
