What do you know about the historic Lucas Gusher? and the story of Spindletop? We all know that Beaumont exists because of the boomtown that was established because of that one event. To tell us more of the history, with a look to the future as well, we welcome the Chair of the Lamar University History department, Dr. Mary Scheer.
Dr. Scheer teaches a variety of history classes in addition to her administrative duties as chair of the department. She has authored several books and was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Potsdam, Germany, in 2004.
The weather has kept us from "digging in" and getting the project started at Nutrition and Services for Seniors, but don't get discouraged! Hold the next couple of Saturdays; we hope the weather will allow us to get it started!
The Club will be providing expertise and a labor force to help Nutrition and Services for Seniors as they build a garden to plant, grow and provide fresh produce for seniors and the homebound who receive meal delivery. Such a great project and we are excited to have the opportunity to assist with this effort as our quarterly undertaking!
Plan to bring work gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and a power screwdriver if you have one.
Those who worked at the Spindletop Club's Annual Soap Box Derby had a really fun time! Shannon Williamson, chairman of this fine "Pit Crew," thanks those who helped including Rob Glassey, Fred Kristiansen, Pat Anderson, Dan Wright, Tim Sudela, and especially her son and daughter too!
Because of their efforts, the Club received this gracious message from Race Director, Bobby Chapman:
"On behalf of the Spindletop Rotary Club, I would like to extent our heartfelt thanks to the Beaumont Rotary Club for once again providing the meal preparation for our workers both Saturday and Sunday during this past weekend’s Soap Box Derby. I can assure you that our workers sincerely appreciated the great meals you provided during two hot and humid race days at the Maury Meyers Bridge. As usual, Beaumont Club members came through with flying colors and we greatly appreciated your Service Above Self to the Spindletop Rotary Club during this, our 14th Annual All-American Soap Box Derby, our club’s signature project."
It was an awesome day! Individually some Rotarians recognized special co-workers or business acquaintances for outstanding service rendered while performing the duties of their profession.
Collectively, the Club and all those present on Wednesday, May 20, were able to bring acknowledgement to others who perform their daily vocation in accordance with the Four-Way Test.
Rotarians were moved to rousing applause and standing ovations for the dedicate to "Service Above Self" demonstrated by others in their profession and daily accomplishments.
