The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Weekly meetings are being held using Zoom. Sign into the meeting between 11:30 and Noon and you can enjoy some social time with other members before the meeting starts at Noon.

The year 2019-2020 was one that will not soon be forgotten, and outgoing President Joe Domino will not be forgotten for the quiet strong leadership he gave to the Club during this challenging year!
On Wednesday, June 24, President Joe has a few people he will acknowledge for their contributions to the success of the year. We will name some Rotarians who have achieved perfect attendance and the "Spirit of Rotary" and "Rookie of the Year" awards will be presented. Though we cannot physically hand awards to those named at this time, we will do so soon.
Moreover, Wednesday will be a time when we will tip our hats to President Joe and celebrate with him as the year comes to a close. We were fortunate that Joe Domino found the time in his busy, busy schedule to accept the challenge of serving as President of our Club, and we thank him for his service throughout the year.

We were preparing to begin our annual project of giving Martin Elementary students books for their home library and summer reading just as the COVID Pandemic began. The students were released to continue their learning at home, precluding our usual day spent with the children for them to shop for books among the selection we gather for them. We quickly re-grouped and decided we will continue the project and will have books for them to read in summer 2020! Though we then had to wait patiently, the book order has now arrived despite being slowed down by effects the pandemic had on the booksellers and delivery.
Now, it is time to label, package and mail the books to the children.
Please come help! We will work on Monday, June 29 at 9:00 a.m. at the Elegante in the Veranda Room (first floor behind the front desk). You need to please wear a face mask. We WILL be social distancing in the room, working one person per table to label and package the books for mailing. Please make sure you feel comfortable with coming to a group project in a public place and if you do, please join us!

Dues invoices were emailed with payment due July 1. You will notice on your invoice that there will be a partial credit applied to the Room Assessment fee. The Board of Directors voted to refund this fee, which amounts to about $1 per week, for the weeks that we have been unable to meet at the Elegante.
If the pandemic has had a negative effect on your employment and you are unable to pay your dues all at once this time, you ARE able to spread your payment over the 6-month period. Speak with Jacque to arrange a payment plan.
Those with credit cards on file will be charged before July 1. Please phone if you have received an updated card or would like to make a change in the card on file.
Those who have submitted information on where your invoice should be emailed or mailed should expect that to be done this week.

On Thursday, June 18, Becky Mason was installed as Governor of District 5910. The video below is priceless. Past President Larry Beaulieu served as Master of Ceremonies, and the Rotary Chorus performance was arranged and musically arranged by our very talented member, Rotarian James Han.

"The Struggle to Help People in West Africa"

Dr. Darius Maggi is an OB/GYN in Denison, TX who volunteers his time, efforts and abilities to help the people of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a small country along the coast of West Africa. The country is the size of South Carolina with a population of around 5,500,000. The country is a challenged country that has a long history of war. Many citizens have been murdered or suffered from amputations from invading tribes. The country is about 70% Muslim and about 20% Christian. In regards to medical access, most Sierra Leone people do not have an ability to access hospitals that are sanitary, have reliable electricity, air conditioning or even qualified doctors.
Dr. Maggi has traveled to Sierra Leone many times to help the women there who suffer from vesico-vaginal fistula. This is a medical condition that results from extended labor due to lack of quality medical care. The condition is basically a miscommunication between the bladder and the vagina that results when tissue and muscles die in the body. Since many women spend several days in their tribe in labor followed by several more days in transit to a hospital followed by another several days in labor at the hospital, fistulas are common in Sierra Leone. Because of this delay in birth, women in Sierra Leone spend an average of 6 days in labor. When a fibula occurs, the women suffer complete lack of control of the urinary functions, and this forces these women to be outcasts from society and leads to a total social rejection. Fistulas can often be repaired with surgery. Dr. Maggi saves these women’s lives by operating on them and giving them a quality of life that wasn’t possible before his interactions. Simply stated, Dr. Maggi has saved lives.
Thanks to Dr. Maggi. His presentation was fascinating and horrifying at the same time. How fortunate we are to have access to education, hospitals and to people like Dr. Maggi.
