The Rotary Club of Beaumont meeting began with the invocation, pledges, guest introductions, and member recognition. Upcoming events were announced, including the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on October 3rd and the upcoming 9/11 flag distribution. Members were reminded of the importance of participating in the club’s flag project, which helps generate funds that support many of Rotary’s other programs and community initiatives. Josh Davis also provided an update from the August 25 Board meeting, including a membership proposal for Douglas Fair, and Victor Zaloom presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Pat Anderson.

The featured speaker was Ellen Buchanan, President of the Big Thicket Natural Heritage Trust, who shared information about the organization’s efforts to protect the Big Thicket region and its natural resources. The Big Thicket Natural Heritage Trust is a local volunteer land trust that works to acquire and protect property adjacent to the Big Thicket National Preserve with the goal of eventually transferring those lands to the National Park Service. Ellen discussed the importance of conservation easements, longleaf pine forests, and protecting natural habitats from development. She also emphasized the significant economic value of conservation, noting that investments in conservation can provide substantial returns to the Piney Woods region.

The presentation highlighted the unique history, geology, ecosystems, and biodiversity of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Ellen explained that the area is home to an extraordinary variety of plant and animal species, including four of the five species of carnivorous plants found in the United States, rare orchids, and wildlife such as the pileated woodpecker. Water conservation was identified as especially important to Southeast Texas, given the region’s dependence on its natural waterways and wetlands. The presentation also addressed current and potential threats to the Big Thicket, including development and infrastructure projects, and discussed conservation partnerships and efforts involving organizations such as the National Park Service and TxDOT. Recent projects, including the acquisition of the Dogwood Trail property for a future state forest, were also highlighted.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on Rotary’s commitment to environmental sustainability and protecting natural resources for future generations. President Jay Wilson thanked Ellen for sharing her knowledge and highlighting the importance of preserving the Big Thicket and its unique ecosystems. Members were also reminded to attend the following week’s meeting, which will feature Dr. Ashley Dockens and Kimberly Conner from Lamar University, who will discuss artificial intelligence and academic innovation.
