Bud Oliver is somewhat new to the southeast Texas area but not new at all to YMCA work. Prior to accepting the local position in June of last year, he worked for the YMCA in Winter Park, Florida, where he managed a large facility, Board and staff. In fact, he has devoted his life and work to “the Y,” first in Nebraska, Ohio, and other parts of Texas before finding his way to new challenges in southeast Texas.
We welcome Bud Oliver who will present a short history of the YMCA, the impact it has made on the area, and the future of the YMCA in Southeast Texas.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The first acknowledgement of this day of recognition is recorded as 1908 in New York City. Since that time, International Women's Day has grown into a worldwide effort to bring focus to women's issues.
Our club members, Teresa Simpson and Cindy Cherry, along with Beaumont Rotaract member Rebekah Maxwell, are spearheading plans to celebrate International Women’s Day along with Rotarians and others around the world. They will recognize the outstanding contributions women have made in Rotary on both the local level and the international scene since 1989, the year that women were welcomed to membership.

Alan Coleman visited with Rotary about the importance of living a healthy life. He gave a detail presentation about the issues that face Americans, Texans, Southeast Texans and what sources are available to educate us about living healthier lives.
Many Americans are out of shape and the effects and costs are amazing. The costs on medical care and medical insurance are rising each year and can be contained by making better choices that will help curtail rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Also, healthier children tend to perform better in school and achieve higher academic success.
Interestingly, obesity affects national security. Soldiers can’t perform at high standards if they are ‘too fat to fight.’ Alan stated that the Department of Defense spends $1 billion annually on weight control programs.
