PROGRAM PREVIEW

“Texas Windstorm Insurance"

 John Polak
General Manager
with
Jennifer Armstrong
Assistant VP of Communications
Texas Windstorm Insurance Association

It's hurricane season!  How prepared are you with both your home and your insurance coverage?

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) is the state’s insurer of last resort for wind and hail coverage in the 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County (east of Highway 146). TWIA provides wind and hail coverage when insurance companies exclude it from their homeowners and other property policies sold to coastal residents. TWIA employees are committed to promote hurricane safety and education, together with the development and enforcement of coastal building codes, in an effort to save lives and property.

Show Your Colors Flag Project
June 14th is national Flag Day and time for "Show Your Colors" Flag Project.  Come be a part of showing pride in the beautiful flag of our country!

Let George Pate or Travis Brewer know you can serve so they can prepare the delivery routes.  If you own or have access to a truck, we really need you!

Grow to Share Garden!

The weather kept us from "digging in" and getting the project started at Nutrition and Services for Seniors, when we wanted to but get ready now!   At least tentatively, Saturday, June 20, will be the day we plan to start work!  Plan to be there if you can.

The Club will be providing expertise and a labor force to help Nutrition and Services for Seniors as they build a garden to plant, grow and provide fresh produce for seniors and the homebound who receive meal delivery. Such a great project and we are excited to have the opportunity to assist with this effort as our quarterly undertaking!

Plan to bring  work gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and a power screwdriver if you have one.

"Show YOUR Colors Too!"
People who phone the office wanting to subscribe to the Flag project often say they did not know where to call until they saw one of our yard signs that are seen around town on days when we distribute the flags.  Please help your friends and neighbors join the program if they would enjoy having a flag in their yard also.  Share the phone number and/or bring them a form to complete and return.  Now is a great time to get started as our new fiscal year and subscription year begins on July 1 for $100.

Moreover, if YOU don't have a subscription, now is a great time to get into the program!

No One Asked?
No More Excuses!

How Will You Serve?
"Gee, I wish I could be on that Committee."  "I sure would like to be a part of that!"  "I wish some one would ask ME to help that way!"

Have you ever had those thoughts and really want to get involved in some way but didn't know know to go about it? This is your chance!

President Elect Pat Anderson is asking YOU how and/or where you would like to be a bigger part of the Club's activities and projects in 2015-16. Tell him! Complete an interest survey in the next week or so and you will be contacted by the Committee chair or Pat himself!

Surveys will be on the tables each week through June or you can complete the survey online by accessing it here.

Did You Earn Perfect Attendance?
It is always a very special day when we have the opportunity to recognize club members for contributions to the successes of the year.  We also recognize those who have managed to earn Perfect Attendance for the year either through meeting attendance, and eClub makeup, serving on and attending committee meetings, or attending a makeup event.  Did you submit a makeup for every meeting you missed?

As we assure that no one is omitted in the recognition process, please help us by reviewing the list below.  If you think your name should be included and it is not listed here, please call the Rotary office right away as we may have overlooked make-ups that were submitted, a committee you worked on, etc.  Please help us correct the error.   (Reminder: you must have been a member of the club for one full year to be eligible this year.)

PROGRAM REVIEW
June 3, 2015

"Texas A & M University
System: Solving Problems"
John Sharp
Chancellor

John Sharp started his day by explaining to us why Rick Perry had been Governor of Texas instead of him.  It started with their freshman year in the Corps when a decision to drive to Waco for a wild weekend began.  The story involved fake ids, beer, Bandidos, and eating crickets.  John Sharp would have been Governor if he hadn’t eaten the crickets to distract the Bandidos because Rick Perry would not have survived.

There are 11 different universities in the A&M System. It is a land grant university with a mission to educate. A&M is known for having graduates receive the second highest starting salaries in the United States. The System has “extraordinary students who become extraordinary adults.”  The traditions of the University and the corps of cadets set the University aside from all other campuses in Texas.

A&M is the top university research facility in the southwest.  Engineers at A & M have developed “clean rooms” in order to test vaccines that can be vaccinated quickly in the case of a pandemic  Their development cost of the clean rooms is vastly less than labs built in the private sector.  The University offers a task force of students who are equipped to handle disaster situations.  These members are utilized by FEMA and other groups.

There are 7 state agencies that function as part of the system as well.  A county agent manages these agencies.  One that is active in this area is Agrilife whose mission is to develop better ways for farmers and ranchers.  With the use of drones, crops can be designated for fertilization or other specific areas. There is also an engineering service and transportation service.  All agencies are “solving the problems of the world.”

In the area of college sports, the SEC has boosted revenues for the athletic department and they are happy with their new conference.

John Sharp’s parting words were, “If you don’t have an Aggie in your family, get one!”
