"Great News from Lamar University"
Dr. Kenneth Evans
President
Lamar University

There is much happening this week at Lamar University.  It is final exam week, bringing the semester to a close for thousands of collegians.  The weekend will be celebrations for those who are completing their studies and "commencing" with their life plans.

We are so fortunate that University President Dr. Ken Evans - also a member of our Club - is able to be with us during this busy time!  We look forward to hearing an overview of the grand achievements and accomplishments of the year and what is in the design for the year ahead.

DUES INVOICING AND THE BILLING CYCLE

Rotary operates financially at the club, district, and international levels. and dues support the work done at each level.  Dues are billed to the individual at the club level, and the club pays District and International dues on behalf of every member who is on the membership roster on January 1 and July 1.

In order for the club to pay dues to Rotary International and District 5910 on July 1, each member must be up to date on his/her dues to the Club no later than July 1 and January 1.

In order to make it as convenient as possible for you to submit a timely payment, the Board of Directors has requested that the invoices be sent to members 30-45 days in advance so that each member has adequate time to budget for the expense, process payment, and assure that the invoice is paid by July 1.

You should receive your next invoice electronically on May 15.  If you have requested to have a printed copy mailed to you, it should be received within the week.  Please phone the office or email admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org to request a different method of billing or payment.

Don’t receive your invoice, have questions or need to change your membership status?  Call 409-842-1913.  Thank you.

Welcome to the Club!
In the past month, several new members have joined the Club and were featured in a Facebook post or two.  In case you missed those posts, meet our newest new members!

Gigi Mazzola, Executive Director of the Cardiovascular Foundation of SETX (pictured on the right), is a self-published children's book author.  She enjoys travel and doing volunteer work so Rotary is a perfect fit!  Gigi is sponsored by Stephanie Shoemaker.

Sean Perrodin, owner of iCreole Bistro at the Beaumont Club, was recruited to join the Club by Michael Perez.  Sean was interested in joining Rotary for the service aspect, and he is particularly interested in the youth programs and services. Welcome, Sean!

John Rollins is Public Relations & Community Impact Director at the United Way of Beaumont and North Jefferson County, working with his sponsor, Karen Husbands. John is also active with the SETX Young Professionals Organization with a penchant for photography. John literally rolled up his sleeves and worked on a service project with us before he was even able to officially join!

Welcome Gigi, Sean, and John!

ROTARIANS CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO
Rotarians don't need an event or a special holiday to get together, but Cinco de Mayo was an ideal reason to have another enjoyable Rotary After Hours!

It was a very enjoyable evening with great attendance.

Thank you to Mellie Bevilacqua, Jamie Pope, Gigi Mazzola, Deborah Drago and all the others who got in on the planning of this fun evening.   (It apparently took a couple of evenings of "tasting" margaritas to decide where to hold this event!  A tough job but someone had to do it!)  Great work!

Spindletop Soap Box Derby Pit Crew!
It was beautiful weather and Rotarians had a wonderful time together while preparing and serving food to Spindletop Club Rotarians who were hard at work running races at the annual Spindletop Soap Box Derby.  Chair Rob Glassey arrived early each day with coffee and breakfast items for those preparing for the day.  With his classy pit, Gerald Condon of Collisions & Classics, took care of the cooking and providing the delicious aroma!  Rotarians were aplenty to serve the workers, preparing each burger and smoked boudain link as requested.

Many more photos are available on Facebook,.

Quarterly Project Report: Shelter Project Completed!

The Club's 4th quarterly service project selected for 2016 was for the Womens and Children's Shelter, and was to assist the agency begin a remodel of a room so that residents could have a nice, "homey" place in which to gather.  In December, Rotarians spent two days doing minor repairs, scraping, caulking, and painting an empty room.  It was not until last week, when we learned that the project was completed and volunteers were invited to see the outcome of the effort.

Chair of the Beaumont Rotary Foundation Uliana Trylowsky and project volunteer Kathy Bachelot visited and presented Deborah Tomov, Program Director, a donation for the project's supplies.  They were able to see the new room in its completed state, and it was awesome!  Rotarians can be proud of the time and labor given to get the project underway as it is now a very warm, inviting, and comfortable facility.  The Shelter manager expressed a great deal of appreciation to everyone who helped on the project.

"Forecast for the 2017 Hurricane Season"
Chris Hebert
TropicsWatch Manager
StormGeo, Inc.
by Charles Heare

Chris Hebert, the TropicsWatch Manager for StormGeo, Inc. visited rotary again for the eighth time to give us a summary of the 2016 hurricane season and a preview of the 2017 season that is right around the corner.

Last year was relatively quiet with only one storm entering the Gulf of Mexico, "Hermine", which was not classified as a "major hurricane" (Category 3 or higher).  The only major hurricane to threaten the US coastline was Category 5 "Hurricane Matthew," which caused major flooding in Haiti, skirted the east coast of Florida, then moved north skirting the eastern US coast and caused significant flooding in the Carolinas.  It has been twelve years since a "Major" hurricane has hit the US coastline.

The forecast for this year is influenced by an expected El Nino environment in the Pacific where the water in the tropics there is warming which causes less activity in the Atlantic and more activity in the eastern Pacific.  Chris said the season this year could be anywhere from "not very active to active," but most likely not very active.  He expects 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major storms this year.  He expects higher pressure over Texas this summer, which would tend to steer any storms entering the Gulf of Mexico away from us.  There is still a small percentage chance that a hurricane will strike our coastline any given year.  If a storm were to form in the Gulf of Mexico, the water is certainly warm enough to power a "Major" storm.

A tool the forecasters will be using this year is a new satellite – GOES 16 – which has the capability of taking a picture every 30 seconds.  The result is more like a movie view of weather activity, rather than the jerky, longer lapse time views of the past.   The resolution is much better as well (one half kilometer now vs. one kilometer in the past).  The improved photo capabilities enable them to even see lightning strikes now, though they don't know yet how that will help them with hurricane forecasting.
