Since 2002, when she became Chair of District 5930’s (south Texas) Polio Eradication Committee, Jo Anne Settles has made more than 100 presentations throughout the US to promote Polio Awareness. Along the way, she has been a keynote speaker in California at the Far West PETS and at four Zone 25 and 26 Zone Institutes, as well as many district conferences, district assemblies and club meetings. During 2003 Jo Anne also traveled to India to participate in a National Immunization Day. In recognition of these and other activities, she was awarded Rotary’s Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World 2006-07.
Jo Anne's presentation is inspiring and moving. You've got to hear her message to feel her passion and her compassion. You will understand just what the end to polio will mean to the world, and you will be proud to be a Rotarian!

The Pink Polio Pig's belly was jingling after last week's meeting! Keep that loose change and dollar bills coming in for polio eradication. ALL DONATIONS RECEIVED LAST WEEK AND ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25 will be DOUBLY-MATCHED! That's right - we have TWO generous donors who are going to match your gift right here at our club. Then when we send it to the Rotary Foundation, it will be matched again 2:1 by the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation!
Before coming to the meeting, clean out your desk drawers and the drink holders in your vehicle, and bring all that change to the meeting. Dollar bills are accepted too! Dana Timaeus introduced The Honorable Randy Weber as our guest speaker on October 18, 2017. Mr. Weber represents the 14th District of Texas and currently holds a key leadership role on the Science, Space, and Technology (SST) committee, serving as the Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee. He also serves as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and on the Subcommittees: Water Resources and Environment, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, and the Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
Mr. Weber has deep roots in our area. Brenda, his wife of 41 years, is a Nederland Bulldog and a former educator. He has raised a family, run a private business and served our community for the past 60 years. He recognized our local leaders, our veterans and Rotarians for the outpouring of service above self during Hurricane Harvey. His first hurricane was in 1961 – Hurricane Carla. He knows the long term recovery from these storms and how much is needed to support the local efforts of rebuilding lives, businesses, and infrastructure. He continues to remind Washington DC that this was the greatest single flooding event in our country.
The Congressional response was unprecedented. During the aftermath both Democrats and Republicans met for lunch in the same room to discuss and deliver a relief package for storm victims. The initial appropriations bill was approved in days rather than weeks and additional appropriation bills are in the pipeline. Billions of dollars are being dispersed in a variety of ways to our area – FEMA, SBA, Grants and a variety of other funding streams. A key misconception is that Texas will miss out on some of the funding due to the Texas Rainy Day Fund. This is a targeted fund and cannot be used if federal funds are available. Another misconception is that due to the other disasters that followed – another four hurricanes and massive wildfires – that the attention will be diverted to those areas. These areas will receive their appropriations of assistance but the needs of our area will not be forgotten.
Another topic that is important to our community is the Sabine Neches Water Way. The dredging project is necessary to our economic security and navigation. Mr. Weber assured us that this is a priority of his, and that Washington knows how essential this water way is to our entire country.
The overall message was of hope and optimism. The Gulf Coast and Southeast Texas is a priority in Washington and Mr. Weber assured us that he will continue to keep our needs and priorities in the forefront.
