A New Look
 RotaryGrams Transitioning to New Look
ClubRunner, our complete computerized system of database, website, bulletin creating, and more, has been upgrading their service and gradually transitioning clubs along through the beta test..  The website has been partially changed and, with today's RotaryGrams, we are introducing the new Version 3 of the newsletter bulletin.  It takes on a somewhat new look, we are attempting to keep the changes to a minimum so that readers still find it convenient and easy to manage.   It will continue to be a work-in-progress so your comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Volunteers "Showed Their Colors" on Veterans' Day!

Our teams loaded up and headed out in the early morning hours of November 11 and raised more than 475 flags across Beaumont to honor the country's veterans.

Thank you to Chairman Pat Anderson and the volunteers:  George Pate, Leonard Juncker, Sharen Kirksey, John Neely, Larry Beaulieu, Chad Blanchard, Slate Babineaux, Keith Giblin, Phil Dunlap, Rob Glassey, Gene Arnold, Alan Sampson, Craig Lively, Cindy Cherry, Butch Cherry, Scott Hatcher, Brandon Fisher, Travis Brewer, David Locke, David Heinz, and Michael Perez.

Chairman Pat was working on the final list of volunteers as the RotaryGram went to press.  If you helped with flags today and do not find  your name listed above, please accept our thanks and send a note to the office (admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org) to earn your make-up and Service Above Self credit.
Pay it Forward

Pay It Forward!

In the second half of the Rotary year, between January and June, we will be hosting students and their parents on multiple occasions for special meetings.  We will have the RYLA students join us for a meeting, followed by Youth Service Above Self Award recipients, scholarship recipients, Interact club students and more.  Your help to cover the cost of the meal tickets would be greatly appreciated.  Please consider donating a meal ticket or two from the next book you purchase.  If you are able, please pay it forward for the next generation of Rotarians to enjoy lunch with us.

Thank you!

"Outsmarting Investment Fraud"
Image

Andrew Conders
Assistant Regional Director
U. A. Securities and Exchange Commission

Our speaker today was Andrew Conders, Assistant Regional Director for the U.S. Securities and Exchange.  Mr. Conders was introduced by Dr. Paul Szuch.

Mr. Conders presented a Power Point presentation entitled "Outsmarting Investment Fraud." Andrews' presentation covered three general areas:
1) The Common Profile of Victims of Fraud
2) The Common Tactics Used By Perpetrators of Fraud
3) Ways To Prevent Investment Fraud

After describing himself as a fourth generation Fort Worth native, and a non-bureaucrat ... Andrews "unleashed" the mandatory "SEC Disclaimer."

Common Features of Investment Fraud Scams can include:
  • Disaster Relief
  • Green Energy
  • Oil & Gas
  • "China" stocks
  • Bird Flu
  • Terrorism
The Common Profile of Investment Fraud Victims:
  • male
  • married 55 to 65
  • financially literate individuals
  • college-educated
  • recent changes in finances or health
  • risk-takers
 The Common Tactics used:
  • PHANTOM RICHES: dangles the prospect of wealth, to the intended victim;
  • Source Credibility: it is BEST to conduct financial investing with credible professionals;
  • Social Consensus: the perpetrator makes references to "everyone else wants in, so you can't go wrong;"
  • Reciprocity: the manner in which they conduct business, gives you the sense that you owe them....like they are doing you a favor.
 Ways To Prevent Fraud:
  • Reduce exposure to sales-pitches & con men, by being pro-active, and seeking out investment opportunities, with professionals;
  • beware of 'Red Flags';
  • ask for credentials, and registration of those seeking your investment capital;
  • thoroughly check-out the person, people, and product (s)
The best rule to follow:  "Trust no one.....until YOU check them out."
