The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Joseph D. Brown was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas on February 26, 2018. Nominated by President Donald J. Trump, Mr. Brown serves as the chief federal law enforcement officer in the Eastern District of Texas, an area covering 43 counties with a population of more than 3.5 million. Mr. Brown is responsible for the prosecution of federal criminal offenses in the district, and represents the United States in all civil litigation in the district.
As United States Attorney, Brown oversees six regional offices made up of 57 attorneys and another 69 support staff, and located in Beaumont, Tyler, Sherman, Plano, Texarkana, and Lufkin.

Save the date for the next Rotary Service Project day! That's right - on Saturday, October 20, Rotarians will work with Nehemiah's Vision on home rebuilding projects in Orange County. Save the date to spend some time and energy helping this agency with rebuilding homes that were damage or completely lost after Hurricane Harvey. Details of the event are forthcoming and an online sign up will be available soon.

You are invited to attend the Club's evening meeting on October 24, World Polio Day, to view the documentary "Dare to Dream: How Rotary Became the Heart and Soul of Polio Eradication." Instead of the Noon meeting on that day, we will convene at 6:30 p.m. at the John Gray Center on the Lamar University campus, enjoy some appetizers and beverages and then preview this one-hour movie.
Please join us and invite your family, friends, and business associates. The admission is $25 and all proceeds will go to the Rotary Foundation and End Polio Now campaign. These funds will be matched by both the District 5910 Governor's initiative and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation so you will be making a significant impact on polio eradication. Meet the Newest Rotarians in our Club!
It was a really great day at Rotary on Wednesday, September 12 when six new members were introduced and welcomed to the club! Please meet them now via the RotaryGrams but make sure you introduce yourself at a meeting in the near future. They are ready to serve!

Arne Almquist is a transferring Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Cincinnati, where he served as President in 2010-11. In fact, he was slated to become District Governor for District 6670 this very year but accepted the position of Dean of Library at Lamar University and had to resign. He is surely being missed as we welcome him warmly to our club. Arne is a trained violinist with 3 music degrees, and says the Rotary fight against polio is very personal as his mother is a polio survivor.
Sharon Almquist is also a transferring Rotarian, and as you might guess, she is married to Arne. You might also guess that they were members of the same Rotary Club prior to their move to Beaumont, but that's not the fact at all. Sharon was a member of the Rotary club of Florence, Kentucky, and with appreciation for the Internet, she actually still works as an Adjunct Professor for Northern Kentucky University while living in Beaumont, Texas! Sharon enjoys teaching and taught history, geography and Latin to middle school students. Sharon and Arne have two daughters, one who is an air force pilot and one studying in Seoul, South Korea.
Jason Apodaca is responsible for Business Development for Turner Industries. He describes himself as "New Mexico-born, but with a Texas heart" after living here for twenty years. He enjoys Crossfit and supporting local politics, but mostly he loves his wife, Ginger, and their four children, being a hands-on dad, coach, and homeroom helper at their school.
Cori Garcia recently moved back to Beaumont after living in Katy for a number of years. She is an insurance agent and her goal is to take over the family Farmers Insurance business. She has three daughters - Maci and twins Maris & Mallori - and in her spare time, volunteers with Meals on Wheels.
Many already know new member John Lee, Business Advisor with the Small Business Development Center at Lamar University. John is immediate past Board Chairman of United Way of Beaumont and North Jefferson County, and has volunteered with the club's flag project a number of times. Previously, John was manager of the Beaumont and Port Arthur UPS Centers until he retired after 37 years.
Welcome back to Ruby Martin! Ruby was a member of the club from 2009-10 and is Senior Underwriter with Caliber Home Loans, the same group of people she has worked with for 28 years. She volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and the Board of Realtors. In her spare time, she enjoys visiting her children and 3 grandchildren, biking, golf, gardening and dancing. Most of all, she loves hiking and climbing, and reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro!

Congratulations to Rotary University Graduates!
It was graduation time at Rotary! Two Rotarians were acknowledged for their contributions and accomplishments by Rotary University Dean, Joanne Brown.
Receiving her Bachelor of Rotary Science degree and Blue Badge was Lori Allen. Lori is Community Service and Public Relations manager for Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Sue Bard received her Bachelor of Rotary Science degree and Blue Badge from President Lynn Castle. Sue is Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Arts Council.
President Lynn Castle presented both degrees which were the first ones to be awarded during this Rotary year. She encourages all other Red Badges to meet the challenge and earn their Blue Badge status soon!

"Kiss Me, Kate!"
Beaumont Community Players

Our Rotary Program today was presented by Paula Bothe, President of Four Alarm Productions. Paula was introduced by President Lynn Castle.
Three selections from the Cole Porter classic, " Kiss Me Kate," were wonderfully sung by two of the newest members of the Beaumont Community Players, Leslie Hicks and Dalton Woody. Musical talents were provided by Darla Lawless. Paula Bothe is the director of this musical.
The storyline of "Kiss Me Kate" is described as "An ex-husband and wife team who star in a musical version of 'The Taming of the Shrew'; off-stage, the production is troublesome with ex-lovers' quarrels and a gangster looking for some money owed to them."
This "timeless classic" is being performed by the Beaumont Community Players at the Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts, for three weekends, opening on September 14, with the final performance on September 29. The Executive Director of the Beaumont Community Players is John Manfredi.
The 2018-19 season has eight shows, including two during the holidays. Season packages go on sale Friday, September 14 online at www.beaumontcommunityplayers.com or by calling (409) 833-4664.
