The Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts offers non-profit programming of live performances to Southeast Texas that stimulates the economy, enhances education, creates social opportunities and attracts tourism. DUES INVOICING AND THE BILLING CYCLE
Rotary operates financially at the club, district, and international levels. and dues support the work done at each level. Dues are billed to the individual at the club level, andthe club pays District and International dues on behalf of every member who is on the membership roster on January 1 and July 1.
In order for the club to pay dues to Rotary International and District 5910 on July 1, each member must be up to date on his/her dues to the Club no later than July 1 and January 1.
In order to make it as convenient as possible for you to submit a timely payment, the Board of Directors has requested that the invoices be sent to members 30-45 days in advance so that each member has adequate time to budget for the expense, process payment, and assure that the invoice is paid by July 1.
You should receive your next invoice electronically on May 16. If you have requested to have a printed copy mailed to you, it should be received within the week. Please phone the office or email admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org to request a different method of billing or payment.

LOOK WHAT'S AHEAD!
On May 24, Sarah Wilson, curator at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, will be speaking about the southeast Texas area, a "breeding ground for the arts." She will explore the "genesis of the early Golden Triangle art scene." Interesting!

Flag Project for Memorial Day
Monday, May 29 is Memorial Day. Rotarians will be engaged in flag distribution for "Show Your Colors!"
Please plan to volunteer to help again with this project. Join with other Rotarians and friends to make sure the flags are flying for our nearly 500 subscribers.
Please phone Pat Anderson at 782-4057 or Gary Moncla at 781-3778 to commit to join the effort and show Service Above Self. We will also need volunteers who own or can borrow a truck.
While serving as Rotarian of the Day, Dan Jeans told of an upcoming fundraiser for his agency, the H.O.W. Center. They will be having the 2017 H.O.W. Center Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 10 at Bayou Din Golf Club.
In addition to helping the agency, the H.O.W. Board has decided to give a donation of 5% of their income FROM ANY ROTARIAN to The Rotary Foundation for End Polio Now! That's right! If you indicate you are a Rotarian, whether you are registering as an individual or a team, or agreeing to be a hole sponsor, they will give a 5% donation to End Polio Now! Splendid idea, and we are grateful. Register now and make sure you indicate you are a Rotarian.
Because he was unable to attend the Rotary District 5910 Conference at the end of April, we took the opportunity to present Pat Anderson with the Roll of Fame award for his many contributions to the Club and to the District. District Assistant Governor Becky Mason made the presentation on behalf of District Governor Gig Langston. Pat humbly expressed this thanks to the selection committee which was led by Past President David Locke. After many years of service to our club, it was a well-deserved recognition of Pat's contributions!

Pomp and Circumstance played in the background again as Dean Lynn Castle conferred a Bachelor and a Doctor of Rotary Science degree on Wednesday, April 26. Receiving the coveted Blue Badge was Wes Shipley (pictured on the right.) Jay Wilson earned his Ph.D. degree.
We congratulate Wes and Jay on their fine accomplishments!

It was a special day at Rotary, especially for Michele Cobb! Past President Angela Baker explained the premise of the Paul Harris Fellow awards, the donor recognition program of The Rotary Foundation. She noted that donations to the Foundation earn points which accumulate. With 1,000 points, a Paul Harris Fellow can be awarded to another person. Angela chose to use her points and give them to fellow Rotarian Michele Cobb so she could be recognized for her Service Above Self with a Paul Harris Fellow. Congratulations, Michele, and thank you Angela for such a thoughtful, generous gesture.

"Lamar University: Moving Towards the Century Mark"

Our speaker on May 10th was Dr. Kenneth Evans, President of Lamar University. Dr. Evans was introduced by Henry Venta, Dean of College of Business, Lamar University.
Using a Power Point with his presentation titled "Moving Ahead Towards The Century Mark," Dr. Evans began by reminding Rotarians that the Lamar University Centennial celebration will be in 2023! Dr. Evans also stated that there are no immediate program plans for the 2023 event, but that "the 2023 celebration will be a collaborative effort of the school AND the community it serves. "We are the jewel of higher education in Southeast Texas."
Enrollment for the fall semester of 2016 recorded over 15,000 students, an all-time record attendance, with more than 900 International students. Lamar University's online student population numbers over 6,000!
With all-time record attendance, the gender breakdown reported was:
62% women
38% men
Enrollment of students is from 39 States and over 30 countries.
Dr. Evans proudly shared some of the institutions honors:
National recognition was bestowed upon Lamar University's Online Masters in Education Leadership, placing 7th in the nation in value.
The College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, a distinction earned by fewer than 5% of business schools worldwide.
Lamar ranks 8th in the nation and first in the state for the most affordable online master's degree programs.
Campus improvements are underway include:
Science and Technical Building groundbreaking.
Setzer Student Center renovations;
Upgrades to Mary and John Gray Library (which includes a Starbucks on the first floor).
Dr. Evans then talked with pride about the Greater South Park Neighborhood Partnership:
2 years since its inception;
has grown from 12 members to more than 40, including City employees and the Police Department;
as of this date, the partnership has cleaned up over 60 abandoned structures.
Dr. Evans concluded his presentation by recognizing the arrival of Mike Schultz, the new football coach, and stating that he is very proud of the athletic teams, and expects them to win more than last year.
Right around that closing statement, members of the marching band, along with supportive cheerleaders and mascots came bursting into the ballroom, playing several rousing tunes with the enthusiasm and spirit of Lamar and Big Red!
