Director of the Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University
Dennis Kiel has been the Director of the Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University for the past 6 ½ years. He comes to the Dishman from Charlotte, North Carolina where he served as chief curator at The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film. Before joining The Light Factory, Kiel was the associate curator of prints, drawings and photographs at the Cincinnati Art Museum for 24 years. He also taught the history of photography at Northern Kentucky University as an adjunct professor for several years. Kiel holds a MA in art history from the University of Cincinnati and a BFA in graphic design from Ohio University. Dennis will speak about what goes into making a successful photograph from the perspective of a curator.

The T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics is presented annually to a Beaumont Rotarian who consistently exhibits the highest ethical standards represented by the Rotary Four-Way Test in his or her chosen vocation.

The original criteria for the award explains:
Nominees must be a member in good standing of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.
Nominees will have exhibited high ethical standards in their chosen vocation arising from a specific incident or by their consistent actions over a period of time.
First presented in 1996, the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics has annually recognized some of the Club's outstanding members. In 2021, this prestigious honor was presented to Randy Shelton.
President Cindy Cherry presented the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics to 2021 recipient Randy Shelton.
An annual tradition since 1996, the Award is named in honor of the late T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. who served as 1942-43 President of our club and as 1951-52 District Governor. It is presented to a Beaumont Rotarian who consistently exhibits the highest ethical standards represented by the Rotary 4-Way Test in his or her chosen profession.

"RYLA 2022"

Dr. Teresa Simpson kicked off our RYLA Day by thanking the Club members, campus staff, and campus administrators who work together to make the RYLA application and selection process happen. The Beaumont Rotary RYLA Committee had an extra hard task this year selecting the scholarship recipients, as we could only select 10 students vs. our usual 20 students due to COVID restrictions. Teresa also thanked Club member Shawn Javid with Riceland Medical for arranging for the COVID testing which had to be completed before the students could board the bus, and Past President Pat Anderson, who both arranged the transportation and served as the bus driver.
We saw a video from Braden Sheldon, who served as a counselor this year. Since there was no camp in 2021, the counselors, who are normally high school seniors, were college freshman this year. Braden sent us the video from College Station, where he is a proud Aggie at Texas A&M University. Braden spoke about how important it is to never give up and how glad he was that the decision was made to hold the camp this year so that others could experience what he had experienced in 2020.
One of our students who attended RYLA this year received the honor of being selected to return in 2023 as a counselor. The student is Montrell Lewis from Early College High School and he spoke briefly to the group. Montrell related what a great experience RYLA had been for him and how he felt it enabled him to “get out of his shell” and take part in more activities with his classmates.
Board Member Judge Randy Shelton then introduced fellow Club member Michael Perez, who serves as the RYLA coordinator for District 5910. Michael spoke about how RYLA is a worldwide program in Rotary, but it is not the same everywhere. In fact, it is different in every District. Some camps are shorter and some longer, in some the participants are high school students, and in some they are college students or even middle school. While the logistics of the program may vary, the concept is the same. It is about teaching the participants leadership skills they can use all their lives, along with the 4-way test. Michael said they were limited to 152 participants this year and eliminated or revised some of the program to better comply with restrictions.
RYLA is all about leadership and teamwork and exposing the campers to the principles of Rotary. Michael said that many Interact clubs are in existence because campers returning from RYLA started a club in their school when they got back. Michael stated that Rotary can be explained by the 80/20 rule, that 20% of the people do 80% of the work. Rotarians are all in the 20%. So are the kids selected to attend RYLA. When kids who are 20%ers find themselves surrounded by other 20%ers, they become excited and motivated and see what is possible when you associate with other people who also want to get things done. They learn that together they can make a difference in the world. They learn that living the 4-way test is possible in their everyday lives. They learn the spirit of Rotary.
