Each year, Rotary changes leadership from the International President, through the ranks to the Club President. One of the intermediate steps is a former Club President who is selected to lead the District as the District Governor. It is a privilege to have this year's Governor for District 5910 attend the Club meeting to inform us of the International President's message and challenge Rotarians to greater achievements.
District Governor Rhonda Herrington is a member of the Rotary Club of Palestine where she has served as president, director, and was the club's bulletin editor for ten consecutive years. Rhonda has been a Rotarian since 1998, with 18 years of perfect attendance.
She served for eight years as District Chairperson of RYLA, for two years as District Youth Service Director, for three years as an Assistant District Governor, and was District 5910 Convention Co-chair in 2004. She is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, member of the Rotary Roll of Fame, and recipient of the Avenues of Service Recognition. She has had the pleasure of hosting 5 Rotary Youth Exchange students in her home, from Thailand, Corsica, Germany, Brazil and Soviet Republic. Rhonda has also been involved with directing the "Zone Tones" for Zone 21b and 27.
Professionally, Rhonda has been an educator for 35 years. She is District Director of Fine Arts for the Palestine Independent School District. She has been State President of Kindergarten Teachers of Texas and Chairperson of one of the standing committees of the Texas chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international organization of key women educators.

Looking for Hosts for Rotary Goes Home!
September 18-22 will be Rotary Goes Home meetings!
Rotary Goes Home, the popular fun event where the weekly Rotary meeting is moved to Rotarian homes, will take place September 18-22 in place of the Rotary meeting on September 20. This traditional event is always a great fellowship experience, getting to know fellow Rotarians in a completely different setting.
We are seeking hosts for one of these fun events. Hosts can decide how many Rotarians can be accommodated at your meeting, and if you would like to have a breakfast, lunch, or dinner meeting. You can decide what you would like to serve. (If cost is a factor, Rotarians will be agreeable to paying for food, just as they would if eating at a weekly meeting at the Eleganté. We will let people know ahead of time so you can collect upon arrival.)
Call Scott Hatcher (409-284-4119) or Michael Perez (210-710-2183) to let us know you can host and give us all the details. We'll take it from there and send you a rsvp list in plenty of time to make your preparations.

Lindy Dennis
Lindy Dennis was appropriately proud as he shared a copy of the Apple Corps News, the publication of Nutrition and Services for Seniors. The front page news included a feature article and photo of his family at the dedication of the facility's grand, new pavilion named for Lindy's late wife, Lelia Dennis. What a great facility and a wonderful legacy!

"Challenging the Elite Universities"

Lamar University Center for Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship

Rotary Speaker for August 16, 2017, was Mr. Paul Latiolais, Director for Lamar University’s Center for Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (CICE). Mr Latiolais was introduced by Dr. Henry Venta, Dean of the College of Business at Lamar. Paul has extensive experience in engineering technology, business development and product launch to Fortune 500 companies.
The building opened in January of this year. The Vision of the Center is to foster through collaborative research and education between engineering, science and business a unique culture of innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship at Lamar University that strengthens existing economic drivers, diversifies the economic base and brings world class innovations to fruition.
The Mission is to leverage the technologies, expertise and infrastructure of Lamar University’s research centers and business resources to establish new innovation businesses and enhance established industries. The CICE works intimately with regional development organizations and businesses to expand market opportunities and enhance the region’s economic capacity.
But perhaps the most exciting aspect of CICE is found in the Centers such as the:
High Performance Computing Center (HPC)
Center for Advances in Port Management
Digital Learning Center
Air and Water Quality Center
Biotech Center
These Centers are involved in:
Mentoring Entrepreneurs
Networking, seeking capital and providing coaching
Facilitating Soft Landings
Accelerating Development
Educating Entrepreneurs by creating curriculum and internships
Empowering Faculty in developing transitional research
The building has 18 offices and conference rooms, 4 labs (2 wet and 2 multipurpose), 3 training rooms, an event center, a Student Idea Hatchery and a Modeling and Simulation Center.
One of the innovation-based startups is AtmoSpark (the first LU Student Start-Up) – it is an atmospheric water generation project that provides freshwater solutions by extracting water from the air. SETX is perfect for this – humidity is our middle name.
Innovation Projects with LU faculty include Drones, 3D Printing, VR/AR, MEMS and Biotech. These projects have resulted in 16 individual projects, 4 papers written and received for publication and the development of a curriculum on Drone Technology.
One of the more interesting partnerships is with former Spice Girls percussionist Sudha Kheterpal. She is collaborating with the Center to create energy sources to be used in third world countries through her organization Shake Your Power.
CICE is committed to Workforce Training. Through a collaboration with LIT, CICE discovered that although there is an abundance of opportunities in the area the unemployment rate is unusually high. There appears to be a gap and CICE is working to close this gap. This started the Grass Roots Outreach Project to find individuals who want to learn, work and succeed in the workplace. The program started in March and so far has enrolled 219 and has secured 21 jobs. This program is going into the community to interview and find those who could benefit from training. So far the results are exceeding expectations.
Lamar University is “Challenging the Elite Universities,” such as MIT, Harvard and Cambridge, by focusing on innovation, harnessing new partnerships and implementing institutional models. Paul invited Rotary members to come to CICE and see their beautiful and innovative building, meet the staff and students and to get excited about the business opportunities of our area.
