Karen Bell, UK Consul General, arrived in Houston in July 2015. As Consul General, she has overall responsibility for leading the United Kingdom’s engagement in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico.
Karen’s business priorities and responsibilities include developing political ties between the UK and the consular district; enhancing trade and investment partnerships; promoting science and innovation links and supporting the delivery of consular services to the many British nationals who have made the region their home.
A career diplomat, Karen joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the 1980s. Before coming to the United States, her assignments have been in Canada, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, London, and Hong Kong.

The Rotary Club of Beaumont was invited to participate in the Neches River Festival parade on Friday, April 13 in downtown Beaumont! What a great way to get the Rotary brand out and about town!
Everyone is invited to participate by walking along the route with our decorated truck which new member, Ty Coudrain, has graciously agreed to drive for us. Past Kings of the Neches, Joe Domino and Hubert Oxford, who are members of the Club and available on Friday evening will be riding in the bed of the truck. President-Elect Lynn Castle and Board members Randy Shelton and Brenda Gray have volunteered to walk the route so come join in the fun!

Have you ever been curious about how someone becomes a speaker at one of the Club meetings? Have you heard someone make a presentation at a meeting or a workshop that really captivated the audience? If you are interested, you could be an excellent member of the Program Committee which selects and secures speakers for the weekly meetings. Plan to attend an open meeting of the committee with Chair Pat Calhoun to begin planning programs for the 2018-2019 Rotary year.

Guest Tickets Needed
On April 18, we will celebrate the achievements made by the four Interact Clubs we sponsor and announce the two Rotary Scholarship recipients. We will have a large number of students, some parents and the school counselors and Interact advisors as our guests that day. If you can spare a lunch ticket or two to accommodate these guests, please donate one at the Wednesday, April 11 meeting. There will be a donation spot at the lunch line so you can drop a guest ticket when you drop your own. Should there be more donated tickets than guests on that occasion, they will be used later in the year when we host more guests for another meeting.

In the 1930s, Rotarians regularly read the musings of two members in the Rotarygrams, the Club's weekly bulletin. The writings of Chester A. Easley and Rabbi Samuel Rosinger were discovered by researcher Marilyn Manson-Hayes who found them both entertaining and interesting descriptions of the era of the Great Depression, prohibition, and Rotary's leadership in community service. Chester Easley was a Baptist born in Texas and was owner of Seaport Coal Company. Samuel Rosinger was a 1900 Russian immigrant and Rabbi of Temple Emanuel. They wrote weekly essays for the Rotarygrams for about 7 years.
Marilyn Manson-Hayes was selected as one of the first Fellows of The Center for History & Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast. She received a grant to develop this research and performance. Rotary was delighted to have Marilyn present a preview of the Depression Era Program using the essays of Rotarians Easley and Rosinger in the Rotarygrams as the basis of "1930s Beaumont Voices," one in a series of lectures for the Center at Lamar.
The “history lesson” is not a lesson at all. It as an entertaining, poignant and humorous snapshot of what life was like in Rotary, in Beaumont as well as the country during the most devastating financial disaster of our time. Rotary played a major role in chronicling the day to day struggles of that era. These performances demonstrate the importance of our weekly meetings and the written reviews of our club’s programs.
One of the programs featured the Burlesque Dancer Sally Rand. She was most noted for her ostrich feather fan dance and balloon bubble dance. Although she was usually more underdressed during her act, she showed her demur qualities at Rotary by showing off her fan dance while dressed appropriately for a Rotary Meeting. Even so – she was a stunning dancer and it is reported that she gave a performance that was extremely well received by (I might point out) the 100% male Rotarian membership of the day!
The Multimedia Performance of Depression Era essays will be performed on Monday April 23, 2018 from 5-7 pm at the Lamar University Theatre. The admission is FREE and that is the bargain of the day. Please make plans to attend. This is an exciting way to introduce potential members to the importance and historical significance of our organization. Take a friend, make a friend, and be a friend to Rotary by participating and supporting this worthy event.
